I do some sub work for Fermi Labs, almost have the unified field of everything wrapped up. I've got my own particle accelerator buried under my back yard but I'm laying low for now. I think the power company is on to me...or maybe they think I'm growing pot.
The worse ones seem to be the weekend race car guys. They want free work, I mean a sponsor, so we could advertise and sponsor a bunch more of them. The last guy got so mad he said he was going to get a plotter and start doing signs too! I haven't slept good since.
That's great that you would compensate him for the tip, but I honestly don't see your point. He might have talent, but many people do. It takes accepting reality, hard work and determination to do something with that talent. Same with music or any field that you can name.
Some very talented...
Where's the problem? Tell him you don't know how long it will take and you will do it for X dollars an hour.
I don't think it will be that bad though with a propane torch, just don't burn it.
"How much for these signs with our logo on it."
"Well, we need to see the logo first."
"OK." (they fax over a very crude outline pencil drawing)... then after my call..."What do you mean the logo would be extra?"
The problem is that's often the first thing that they say. I usually say something like "how much is a car".... But I don't believe that I've ever done a job for anyone that starts out that way.
These would be funnier if they weren't true.
My favorite has been mentioned similarly..."How much are your signs?"
me... "We don't have any in stock."
me in a bad mood..."I'm sorry, we just sold our last one."
Or how about..."I'm getting a new truck, can I reuse those vinyl letters?"
Or...
They're teaching Illustrator and Photoshop in high school now? Geez, no wonder there are so many start up sign shops. And I had to walk to school, uphill both ways, in the snow, with no shoes....
Yep, better than too short! But I agree with doing it in your own shop if you can. A table saw with a decent fence and a triple grind blade can do it and you aren't at the mercy of someone else's work.
The cutter probably divided the difference since coroplast tends to run over sized and saved...
Judging other people's work is how we judge our own, we don't operate in a vacuum. If one sets out to produce quality work, that's how they go about setting themselves apart from the lower quality work.
Now if you are only producing work by the pound, no pun intended, it's a different matter...
I would. In fact I turned down a 25 year customer recently since their office gal thought she was a designer. I explained that if we did the job, someone may think we designed it. Haven't heard from them since.
