  1. Welders - who uses them?

Like any thing else in our industry, a welder is a production tool. Just as different printers can handle different volumes, quality and at considerable various investment costs. When used correctly a Lister welds fine just as do Triads and Millers and any RF machine. The problem is the price...
  2. InDesign & Illustrator Tip for the Mathematically Challenged

Great tip! Took me years before I learnt that one as well. Also works great with rotating objects around a circle when constructing objects. i.e. 360/24 is the amount to rotate a shape and place 24 objects evenly around a circle.
  3. Proper thickness for large banner

Call Shomi in Toronto. 905 274 5537 They do nothing but banner finishing, welding, sewing and installations such as this one. As long as it is installed correctly you can use 13oz flex. Most of the large banners on buildings in Canada are on 13oz flex (flat surfaces). They have tons of...
  4. Seal Base 62

As you are in the within the GTA, I suggest contacting Brian Gibson at Seal for a training session. Brian really knows his stuff and can answer all your questions, absolutely worth the cost to be shown by an absolute expert.
  5. Hmmm laminator question

Follow fmg’s suggestion. Look at the chain & sprockets. First impression is the chain is not driving the roller(s).
  6. Printing on Laminate

I have done it many times. As others have said the color will not be “solid”. Without getting into a debate on the physics or theory of printed color just consider this; all ink in all inkjet printers is transparent (not translucent), you can see through it. However this can often lead...
  7. AHHHH...Need to rant about stupid customers!!!

Now as you are in Ottawa.........Was that the French or English version?
  8. MDO vs. Flatbed

FYI but it may not help you immediately…….. Some of the high volume guys have actually gone back to the source (manufacturer) of the MDO and now specify the actual type of wood in the ply. Not the typical types of timbers used in your standard MDO supplied by the regular suppliers.
  9. Wind slit placement

Perhaps I am showing my age…… When I was an apprentice hand painting canvas banners they actually had sewn reinforced 6” holes in them. As you would mark-out the banner you would have to accommodate the lettering and design to flow around the holes. Point being….. if the customer...
  10. Gatorboard Trouble

I am sure your supplier won't know.......Call the manufacture, Alcan, directly and ask them. Let’s face it, many manufactures are trying to maintain margins and there have been subtle changes to many products without telling the consumer or even the supply chain
  11. What happened to this banner?

Actual manufacturer’s specifications for banner materials often only suggest a temperature service range down to about 40oF or perhaps 32oF. Practical experience has shown me that some banner materials can handle much colder conditions while some give in much sooner. Right now blame it on...
  12. Big Banner Suggestions...

Looks like you will have to drop 'guide wires' down into the ground as well to support those poles. All something the fair grounds people should be capable of.
  13. Favorite Quote from a Customer Today

Also a customer said to my father, a well know artist in my home town, "Is that the best price you can give me?" He took back the quote, quickly drew some wonderful flourishes and cute characters around the price on the quote. Handing it back, dad said, “Your right, this is much better now”.
  14. I cant believe it?

Really wanty to send him a mesage.........next time you see him take $25 out of your wallet and give it to him and tell him " you'll loan him the money to pay you". I've done it.....really sends a message. Oh and get ready to duck.
  15. Disgruntled Postal Worker?

I for one didn't take the package because I wear a size 12.
  16. Big Banner Suggestions...

If it is truly between poles (i.e. street banner) a no backing, 13oz is not adequate, so go for 18oz to 20oz. Secondly one way to best install a ‘street banner’ is 2 extremely tight cables and I mean tight. Attach the banner to the cables & also tension the banner tight as a drum skin. This is...
  17. Bullet Resistant Sign material???

Send it off to the Myth Busters! They love shooting things.

  19. New HP Designjet L25500 Series Printers

    Metaphorically speaking!
  20. sometimes words dont look right

That’s because we sign professionals are looking at the shape of the word….. the flow & feel that the word eludes…….the pleasant symmetries of the kerning……..we want this to be the best possible looking word ever to grace the eyes of those that may look upon it! Or as Bones would say if he...
