Hello all, my name is Ted.
I have a small, part time sign business making small signs, banners, vehicle graphics and pinstriping (as well as logo and graphic design).
I work mostly with vinyl (LXI Master Plus software) and basic 24" vinyl cutter, some hand painted work, especially with pinstriping.

I've been in and around this industry for over 40 years, working for a small sign shop back in the 1980's.
Back then everything was MDO plywood and painted everything. Pounce patterns and a yard stick, grease pencil, One-Shot and lettering brushes.
Currently, I am a Structural CAD designer as my primary career (over 25 years), but have had my own part-time business since 1985.

I'm glad I found this site, and am looking forward to see all your discussions, and to get answers to questions I may have, and maybe even answer a question if I can.

Hello! Remember these words? Electro Pounce Jr.
Hello there, I don't remember that.
I just looked it up, seems it was a high tech way to make pounce patterns, pretty cool, never heard of that before.

When we did pounce patterns, it was using a pounce wheel (like a spur on a swivel stick) to poke holes in paper, marking out the rough design, and then hit it with a bag of chalk onto the surface.
For the chalk bags, we used cloth rags with a balled-up piece of cloth in it, filled with chalk-line chalk, and just tape around the bottom to make a "ball" (sort of looked like a cartoon ghost).
I still have the pounce wheel and the chalk bags.
(cheers!)

Hi,

Yes, it was faster than the pounce wheels. We did a double sock for the pounce bags.
And yes, I also have the wheels, pounce bags, mahl stick, flat, quills, fitches, etc. all gathering dust.
Once in a blue moon I get to brush a little. Rarer and rarer.

Happy Days!

When I started, they didn't have MDO...... that they knew of, we had duraply. which to sound impressive, they started calling it MDO or HDO. Same thing, but you could charge more for the fancy sh!t. Almost $1,50 a sheet more. 1/2" 2 sided was $17, something a sheet.
