Banner Tape and Grommets- How Do You Mark Where They Go?

I just finished a couple of banners and I used the tape method to seam them. The way I did it was:

Tape:
-Trim the banner 1" bigger than I want it.
-On the back I use a ruler and I put small marks 1" in every 1-2 feet.
-I apply the tape using the dots as my guide.
-I then peal off the tape backer and fold and stick the edges.

Grommets:
-I line up a tape measure along the edge.
-I use a grommet to put a dot in the center of the grommet where I want it to go.
-Use grommet press to put in grommets

I know there are some software programs that put the grommets in, but I don't have that I don't think.

Can anyone point out a more efficient way that I can do this?

When I print I put a line an inch away from the print on all sides. THis is your trim line. I trim to that line. and then stick the tape to the edge. of the banner. Peal the tape and fold it over until I see the edge of the print. If the banner is white on the edge in some areas I make a box along outside of the print and fold to that line.

The grommets I place markers in flexi. 1/8" dots. I space the first one right at the corner and then use step and repeat to get to the other side. Usually we do grommets every two feet.

I have a 2.125" wide piece of thin sintra for this - draw a line on the back using the sintra (for quickness) - lay out the tape to that line, fold over to the tape edge.

Flexi has the option to add trimline, grommet marks, etc. I use it on every banner now.

Several RIPs now offer trim marks and grommet marks which are added to the design file by the RIP. Caldera, SAi, and Onyx all offer these features in their latest respective versions (there may be others as well that I am unaware of).

Fiery XF also has the option to add grommet marks and crop marks, but we usually just do it in Illustrator. Same way Big Easy described.

The only one of you that understands the problem is J Hill. The tape goes on the back of the banner, the print goes on the front. That being the case there's not just a whole hell of a lot you can to to the front of the print that will tell you where to tape and hem on the back of the print. Just do as J Hill and moi do. Trim the print so that it's exactly 1" larger than the finished image area all the way around, flip the print over, mark a line 2" from the edge all the way around. I use a 2" wide 6' drywall rule and a plain old vanilla pencil. Put the tape on the edge of the media and then fold and burnish to the line you drew 2" in.

For grommets, flip the banner over, lay that same rule along side, and make a tiny mark every whatever with a Stabillo right on the edge. My grommet press has a small table and a back fence that precisely locates the distance in from the edge. All that's required is to line up the mark I made on the edge of the banner with the mark on the fence that indicates the exact center of the die.

Not rocket surgery, just a little common sense. Which doesn't seem all that common anymore.

We make a box or bleed out the 1" extra on each side, cut to that size. Tape the edge and fold, ive done enough that i can eyeball it and get a consistent fold over.
For grommets we have marks on our production table ever 1'. Depending on the banner size we do every 2 feet or spaced however we need to.

I make the banner 1" larger all the way around. Trim to that edge. Apply the tape. Fold the hem over with the paper still on the tape, makes a nice clean fold. Then peel the backing off, and stick it together. I have marks on my table, so I just flip the banner over, mark using the measurements on my table and done. No need for rulers and all kinds of extra stuff, IMO. I can trim, hem (all 4 sides), and grommet a 4x8 banner in 5 minutes or less.

You can save yourself some time with the tape measure and just use the roll of hem tape to mark the back of the banner... Just a Little trick we do
