Best Material For Job

We have an order to create a mural for 16 4' x 8' panels. The panels that are up now are made of wood. Is there a material that is suited to apply to wood or should we apply first on a different substrate then mount?

Without seing the condition of the existing material I would go with new panels.
.040 aluminum or better yet-dibond
