Best transfer tape for air release backing paper

Seems most vinyl comes with air release now. What application tape is everyone using that sticks to the backing paper of these vinyl's..

I have had a few customers complain about the transfer tape and how they do not like it.

Don't use air release vinyl and see how they like THAT!

We use R-Tape, and it doesn't stick to the liner very well, but in 10 years we've never had a customer complain they don't like it. It is what it is.

We used to exclusively use 3M SCPS-55 for air-release liners, then they got carried away with their pricing.

We've since switched to TransferRite 992U and it's been working fairly well.

I am using R-Tape and customers are complaining that they are receiving it not attached to the vinyl.. I have never had that problem,, Might be the cold during shipping.. Been below zero for weeks now.

That's different than not sticking to the liner. If it's not sticking to the vinyl that's a problem. I wonder if it is the cold.

TransferRite 510U AirMask, it's designed for this exact application and works very well.

I just spoke with the customers, Some do not like that it arrives tape not adhering to liner, Three said it was not adhered to the vinyl itself..

If we're making decals that require transfer tape, we generally do not use air release vinyl.

They have specific transfer tape for air release liners - it costs a lot more, and it doesnt work that much better.


We usually just leave a .5" section of vinyl around the graphics, so the transfer tape adheres to that vinyl. That way when installing the customer (Or our installer) Has a perfectly square reference for installing as well.... It's a lot easier than trying to level text when it seems like half the time it's a script font and a pain. It's a small .5" Section...so it peels off easy if the customer squeegees it down, and our installers know not to press it down. With it having an edge for the transfer tape... the transfer tape never falls off the liner. Kind of like below

Thats what I do, leave a border around the decal for the transfer tape to stick to if using air release vinyl

I do that, makes it easier to tape, but I always cut it off. Never thought of leaving it. I might try that for things we install. Not sure if I'd leave it on if we're handing it off though. I wouldn't know who's doing the installation, and they would probably think it's supposed to be there and leave it.

The border idea is good..I will try that next time, but I usually just staple the four corners and explain to the customer just to cut them off before install.

We use R-Tape 4050 RLA conform, seems to work pretty well with air release vinyl as that's what it's for and isn't too expensive although I do love the border idea!
