When you guys stretch canvas's over frames and staple them on the back. What do you use to cover the staples. We never cover them. We are going to start doing a lot more for photographers and other stores. We want them to look good on the back and not have to worry about the staples scratching anything.

Framer's tape gives a nice clean finish to the back of our canvases.

Yes, use framer's tape on the back to cover the staples (see video), also some times I use double sided tape and attach a large sheet of black acid free paper to the entire back side for high end gallery wrap projects.

Where is the best place to get framers tape? Also never thought of the whole sheet of paper, whats a good place to purchase that?

i use brown kraft paper for the backing, you can get framers tape online from any art supply company.

i did 22 of them a few weeks ago and used some white duct tape.

I use vhb tape around the frames so don't have the need for staples. Much faster install too.

One would think that VHB would have a hard time maintaining its integrity under the strain of stretched canvas. Assuming that you're stretching it properly. Whereas a staple will outlast the next ice age. Moreover, assuming an air stapler, you should be able to stretch and staple faster then you can farkle around with VHB. Especially if you're stretching according to conventional wisdom and not merely fastening an entire side at once.

Call back in a year or so and report on just how that VHB worked out for you.

I use the Black Tyvek backing paper from: http://www.materialconcepts.com/products/tyvek/black-tyvek/

However, I think you can get regular kraft picture frame backing paper from Michael's or Hobby Lobbym, and maybe the Framer's Tape.

I actually don't put that much pressure on the canvas. I don't farkle around with the tape either, 15 seconds to apply around the edges. I won't be posting a video, but I can saw down a 1x2 to size, nail it, apply tape, and have canvas on in less than 2 minutes.

I have been making Gallery Wrapped canvas prints for a very long time and NEVER heard of anybody using tape to secure the stretched canvas. You have to use special canvas Stretching plier's to stretch the canvas and should use a pneumatic stapler to fasten the canvas to the frame. I can't see double sided tape being very easy to work with and not allowing you to pull the canvas over (across) the wood frame, seams like the canvas would get stuck and not be able to stretch.

There is no way you can put out a quality product in 2 minutes for that. Just cutting the wood to length, getting the 45' angle and running them throught the router so the canvas doesn't touch the frame except for the exterior edge of the canvas would take more time than that and if you aren't actually stretching the canvas, it's not going to last anyway. Hope you aren't charging much for that kind of workmanship.

I only give them away, so I don't worry about complaints.

That makes a lot more sense. You made it sound in your original post that you were doing regular canvas wraps with tape. I just did 9 wraps yesterday. 8 of them wer 16x20 but also had to do a 36x92 beast. There is just no way that tape would work on those and they would last for 50 years. I'm with you now. What you are doing is a very nice freebie.

How many stiffeners did you use, and at what spacing (etc.)?

I've used a few from Liberty. We have one in our shop that's about 4 years old and still tight as a drum. We just never really pursued the market.

Hello,

20 plus years experience in this field. It is not necessary to worry about covering them. Just staple canvas on the underbelly/back of frame...not outer back. I have never come across a customer that made staples an issue when stapled on the underbelly. You don't see them if done this way.
