Font size

I have a question about font size regulations.
I tried to do a Google search but it is unclear for the size of the US DOT and the GVW.
The US DOT is says 2 inches, I thought the GVW had to be at least 1 inch but it looks like they've grouped the GVW and the US DOT together and now is says 2 inch?
But I'm not sure. Because also says visible from 50 feet away?

Any clarification would be great. Thank you in advance

PS a 2 inch GVW is huge in my opinion.

We have done trucks & signs for over 30 years, We have always done 2" unless the owner asks for something different.
We have often done 1.5" on lots of trucks. We have never heard anyone getting in trouble unless the are already scrutinizing the truck & or driver & looking for problems. Just warn the owner/ driver before commuting to it.
Most drivers just want it Legal... 2" tall. Try dong the newer day cabs with no Sleeper & getting a USDOT, MC, VIN, & GVW on the truck. With the big observation/ safety windows on the passenger sides, there's hardly enough room to Put a name or Logo on the doors let alone room for 4 lines of numbers. I don't know where the mfg and DOT expect you to put numbers. Maybe put them on the hood/ cowl?

Arial Sucks.
I've always seen 2 inches as the rule for that kind of lettering. However, the rules don't dictate the kind of typeface chosen for the lettering. If space is constrained you can use a condensed typeface. Any of us should have a good collection of variable fonts loaded with weight and width axes capable of providing fine tune control over cramped spaces.

It's better to have two hands than one glove.
When you say 2" characters you're being most ambiguous. Do you mean the height of an uppercase alpha character with a flat top and bottom such as an E, or do you mean the vertical size of the type body which is usually taller than the tallest alpha character? One would assume it means 2" uppercase alpha but, nonetheless, it's not specified anywhere.

As long as I was doing them, they were all 2" tall and it specifically says block type style somewhere in the rule books. It also mentions high. Contrasting. Colors of copy to the background. Do what ya want............. and see what happens
