Join points in Illustrator?

Is there a way to join to open points in Illustrator instead of connecting them with another line?

Yeah, select 2 open points (with hollow arrow tool) and hit "command-J" (on a mac) or it's located under object/path/join

That puts a line between the 2 points which is usually fine but sometimes I want to to "snap" the 2 open points together without that extra line. I don't think there's a way to do that, is there?

if you move the point it should snap onto the one you want, then marquee select that region and ctrl-J - just tried it it works

It doesn't create a new line, just moves the points.

Are you on CS5? Try the new shape builder tool. It's pathfinder join taken to an entirely new level.

You can align points to or on top of each other and then apply the join command.

It's a bit similar to how CorelDRAW does it, but with an extra twist. Using the Direct Selection (white arrow) tool click one anchor point and then shift+click another anchor point. The last point clicked will stay locked in place and the first point clicked will align to it.

In CorelDRAW you can either marquee select nodes or shift+click them directly to do the same thing. In Illustrator you have to directly click each anchor point. If you marquee select them they'll align to a certain part of the document (center, top, bottom, etc.). That's the extra twist to the deal.
