Mimaki JF 1631 - Dual CMYK color profile help please

Hello, My tech is on site and we have finally changed my JF 1631 over to dual CMYK and now we need detailed instructions on how to set up the color profiles for this. We have rasterlink, can anyone help?

Make sure rasterlink is closed.
go to start ,all programs, rasterlink,profile manager and click ok

that should bring up the profile manager.
go to the top click on profiles, device,add profiles, manipulate your way to where you have saved the downloaded files, Highlight all of them (make sure they are not zipped and if they are then unzip them all before getting to this point) you should see them all being added to the list and when finished you should see a black down arrow click on that and it will add them all. At this point you should also see any profiles that you dont want in the list and delete them. use the buttons on the top to delete or remove profiles.
Once done close and then open rasterlink then go to a job and then " print condition" and the profile you would like to try....

The difference with some of them is the dot size, which you can modify anyway, also bi direction or uni and the dpi. 600 x 600 is the starting point but if you want better quality then increase the dpi to 1200 however remember it will be slower.
How much have you used rasterlink?

We print on wood and aluminum but would be more concerned about making it right for aluminum. All 3 of my machines are on rasterlink, but for dual CMYK to work do I just use any CMYK color profile? What will make all 8 heads fire? I was under the impression if I use a CMYK color profile then only the top row of ink cartridges would put ink down...is this not the case?

I guess my question is how do I get all 8 heads to fire if I am only in CMYK?

Though I am not familiar with your particular machine [ JF 1631 ] MOST Mimakis' running dual CYMK ink set up will fire ALL the print heads exactly as they where designed too. The only difference with the dual CYMK set up is that the second set of ink carts only supply ink after the primary cart runs out of ink. IF the "tech" you mentioned in your first post on this issue is factory trained he/she should know this. Provide that your tech did the conversion to dual CYMK matching cartridges SHOULD be tied to each other with the proper fittings at the back of the cartridges. IF done per factory specs once you do your initial fill sequence, the machine will do most of the work for you regarding switching carts when needed. YOUR Job will be using the Rasterlink software to properly monitor the ink consumption, and keep a set of back up inks in stock so that once your primary ink carts "switch" to the secondary carts you can swap in the replacement carts and the process continues.

I must have completely misunderstood what dual CMYK meant. Based on earlier conversations on here, I was told it would allow me to print at a lower pass rate with higher quality results and your method does not suggest that at all. I am not sure the advantage of your method...usually what I do when i run out of ink is put a new cart in and then continue printing...pretty basic. Not sure why I would want to piggy back two carts so I can print longer without a change. My tech is very knowledgeable just has limited setups in dual CMYK, especially the way you describe it.


Here is what another technician said about Dual CMYK and what I should expect. Read below

magenta cyan yellow black black yellow cyan magenta
is the way it should be done.
where the first cart at the top left is magenta and the bottom left is also magenta, so it goes in a circle.
there is an option to change this in" ink change" in service mode from memory. You will need working heads in all eight slots, you will also need to flush out and probably replace all the dampers on the bottom row/ or the heads from the black middle to the right i.e heads 5678.
You will see a great improvement in the print quality.
However in saying this the alignment has to be spot on , and this takes a lot of time with a magnifyer. I use a usb camera attached to my laptop with 200x zoom it works a treat. I have one customer who has this setup who is winning contracts as the machine is so so good.
The profiles used are just the standard mimaki ones that he has modified by reducing the overall density of ink, but decreasing the dot size of the 3 sizes you can adjust. Bi direction print is very good.
I am talking rasterlink 5 IP as the rip 600x 600 Dpi at 6 or 8 passes
If there is ever a problem with missing nozzles the extra heads seem to compensate so u can still have a reasonable print, but you must increase the pass rate to compensate.

Each head has its own cartridge.
Rasterlink will sort out the head firing in its calculations when ripping so all you need to do is select a profile that is suitable for alucabond.
The machine itself must be configured for dual cmyk. Your tech should be able to set this up in the settings.
Imagine the machine is new and it will ask you what configuration you want to go with, at this point you scroll through and select the correct one and then it will fill.
From memory if you do a head wash in maitenence mode it will do this. however you will need washing cartridges to complete the procedure, this should be in the operation manual.
I still stand by my comments that dual CMYK is the best way to go with this machine!!
Do you have the original owners manual or installation manual?
Oh and something else.
You must setup in rasterlink a new printer with only 4 color selected, so the printer driver you have now will probably have to be deleted and a new one setup in "add printer" in the start menu of the computer under rasterlink...

Tekkie, thanks for the input, my tech has since left and he was not real up to speed on the Dual CMYK set up. All I know is right now I have a good test draw on all 8 heads and everything is good I am just not sure if the bottom row of carts are printing or not.

I guess we never saw a place that said where to configure for CMYK, we just selected a CMYK color profile so I may only be printing with 4 carts right now. Any advice as to where to look for the setup of Dual CMYK? is it in the rasterlink software, printer management or the color profile?
