Mutoh Valuejet 1324 [kcmy] Broken Chip Error

Hi,

I have an Error on my Mutoh Valuejet 1324 of [KCMY] Broken Chip and will not let me get past this error.

I have tried the inks in my Valuejet 1304 and they work fine.

Help Please :)

Thanks.

What kind of inks are they? If they are 3rd party, the different firmware between the 1304 and 1324 will handle it differently and it is very possible that the 1304 allows them but not the 1324.

If the inks are OEM and the chip error still persists, the junction board that relays the signal to the main board might be bad. It is rare that all 4 chips would fail at the same time except if that board was damaged or the inks are not OEM.

Smartcards for 1304 and 1324 are completely different. I mean structure of data in card memory. It impossible to use cards from one printer to another.

Not to call you out but that's not true. The 1304 did use a different version of the ink when it came out but when the 1324 came out, Mutoh made it so the new ink worked in both machines and stopped manufacturing the old style. They use the exact same ink but the firmware for the 1324 is more limited when it comes to 3rd party.

Out of curiosity, has the issue been resolved? I have had the same issue and the first thing I now look for when I receive the, KCMY (Broken Chip) error is to investigate the Ink ID Board Assemblies. They are the sensor where the ink chip makes contact and are being read for info, down at the bottom of the ink cartridge slot on one side. Check for any broken connections on the sensors and replace if necessary.

I still have this issue :(
I have checked the Ink ID Boards as Picture above and they all seem fine, no broken pins.
When I put OEM inks in I get the KCMY Broken Chip Error but when I put Compatible inks in I get KCMY S/C Readerr.
I have also tried both the ink types in my other printer which is a Mutoh VJ 1304 and they show up fine.

If the chips work in another printer and all of the readers look good on the new one, the most likely culprit is the heater junction board. I just changed one recently for the same issue and it fixed it. Unfortunately the board is around $400.

Also the spring plates that hold the reader can loose their tension and need removed and bent back to shape.
I have had to replace the same one twice on my 1604 last week and even then on the last attempt the spring plate had dropped in wrong.
I still reckon it is something to do with the chip reader. Have you physically removed them and checked?

Ok, so I bought a new Junction board, installed it and no change, still coming up with Broken Chip Error or S/C ReadErr.
I replaced the Chip Readers from a working Mutoh all checked and no pins bent etc.
When I install genuine OEM Inks they show Ink End as there is no ink in them but just to test.
When I put other type of compatible inks in they show Broken Chip.

KCMY Broken Chip Error or S/C ReadErr on my VJ1204as. Cleaning cartridges worked no problem. Latest Firmware and Latest Heating controller Firmware.Placing in a OEM ink and boom: Broken Chip Error or S/C ReadErr.Have not replaced the heating junction board due to the cleaning cartridges working! Hmmm...Hopefully we solve this mystery soon.

If you have already put a cartridge in a machine and it was flagged as empty, it will always flag empty on every machine you put it in. You need new cards on the cartridges.

I love when people think they know the solution and give a cryptic answer to hint they know, but most likely do not.

UMCA, either give an answer or say nothing.

The unlock procedure is uploading special service code to printer's memory. That code is switch off module of smart card detection.
The code is unique for each printer.
But normally Mutoh does not provide unlock to customers. So, you have to ask some technician for create unlock code if you need it. I did it for my printers.
If you interest I can give you contact.

Just remember, when you get this procedure done by anyone other than Mutoh, you are technically receiving pirated software. You can decide on the morality of it all yourself but you should know that anyone who does this procedure outside of Mutoh is doing it illegally.

Very simple. Smart cards, contact point of the refillable cartridge, junction board, ink id board. Correct to VAnderJ. It is almost impossible for all four cards bad at the same time. I've used original cartridges to reset it to ready to print. Then use compatible cartridges. Stay with OEM if you are still under warranty or Mutoh will hang up the phone. ; P

Another one is to insert each cartridge separately. Rule out the one that is shorting the other three.

Reviewing the old post and realized that this one was never really answered. Everybody did a great job of diagnosing the usual suspects when it comes to Broken Chip errors on a Mutoh. Nobody bothered to ask the size of the cartridge that was being inserted. The Mutoh 1324X and the Mutoh 1324 with upgraded firmware, refuse to use 440ml cartridges. The reasoning behind this is that the larger, and therefore heavier cartridge could potentially break the fragile plastic parts inside the Mutoh 1324 frame. A quick look at the Spec sheet for the printer will show that the machine will accept the 220ml cartridge and the Mutoh Bulk 1L adapter, but not the 440ml cartridge.
Additionally, all the original cartridges coming from Mutoh have a new set of codes that are backwards compatible with older printers. Most 3rd party cartridges will be coded in the old format and will not read on the newer printers although they work fine on older printers. Companies that sell compatible ink for Mutoh that specifically ask for the model number of the printer normally have access to both sets of cards and will program appropriately.

To further clarify:
Mutoh VJ-1324/1324X with anything over firmware 3.02 cannot run 440ml cartridges. This is, in fact, because the cartridges are in the printer horizontally and 440s will not properly drain. Anyone with a Mutoh VJ-1324 or 1324X can use the 1000ml bag adapters. Broken chip errors may or may not be solved or bypassed with a firmware upgrade to 3.09. This update allows most errors to be bypassed by piggybacking the defective channel to a good channel, meaning up to 2 bad smartcards. Broken chip is a broad error. Often it is a precursor to the reader failing to read the cards, perhaps the contacts just need cleaning. S/C Read Errors are what the upgrade is intended to bypass.
If you are buying genuine Mutoh ink (and hopefully not in particular STS ink), we can bull an MPI file off of your printer. Mutoh will rewrite it to allow you to run without valid smart cards for a period of time. There is no charge for this process or firmware update, unless your dealer is not looking out for your best interest (shall we say). I you are a Fellers customer, please call us at Equipment Support.
