I am printing a 4x8 site sign....
Printing on Matte Cal, which will be lam'd and mounted to mdo....should I print on someother type of adhesive back?

That decision is entirely up to you.
What I'm saying is... that it sounds like you chose the wrong profile for your 'Matte Cal' media. Possibly whatever machine you're using is finicky and needs a more precise profile.
If I send a file to print on Matte Cal and using a particular brand of vinyl… it might react differently if I choose a profile for Matte Cal wrap media.
That’s the reason for having proper preferred printable profiles…. that’s easy to write, but hard to say 5 times in a row lol
