Pull the banner all the way out and lock it before taking the top bar off.

Use banner tape.

We cut the banner off right at the edge and tape it to the banner... The original material the banner gets taped to rips very easy, so going banner on-top of banner allows you to do more changeovers.

Quit buggin' me
We just use a scrap of Ij35c about 5" or 6" along the bottom edge. Once there are a few wraps around the winder the tension will keep it in place. Works every time - costs nothing.

I do the tape along the bottom. But I agree make sure it is locked before you take off the top bar.

High-brow and I rock a little know-how.
I've actually had success using 1" double sided tape from Uline. I wedge an allen wrench in the key slot to keep the banner from retracting while I work. There is a great tutorial on youtube.

I sell stickers and sticker accessories.
Banner tape, and/or a scrap piece of vinyl front and back for extra hold.
