step by step boat wrap guide

in one of the wraps magazine (before they consolidated into digital graphics), there was an article that basically took you step by step wrapping a boat, anybody have a pdf of that by chance?

if not, maybe a few boat specialists can shine a light on bass boats and the best way to measure for the bend towards the front, things to look out for while designing, etc.

have had 5 calls on bass boats the last 2 weeks....maybe there's something to this market.

I've read all the posts here on boat wraps. I too am wondering about the curve above the rub rail though. I was hoping some one would post a jpeg of the print they did. That would be huge in terms of seeing what my final layout might look like. My first wrap and its a boat. I got advil if you need it. This picture is my attempt to visualize how to print this. On youtube I've seen them print large and trim. But Im clueless still.

I'm no boat expert, seeing as that was my first and only.
A lot of people hate boat wraps but this was my favorite install so far.
The wrap just fell into place after designing off the template. I think the people who really hate them are trying to lay a rectangular print, and thats just asking for headaches, especially if anything crucial has to line up on the bow.

Funny thing is, i just got off the phone with the owner of this boat. Said its holding up perfect after 1 year, which is great. I was worried since the boat can run up to 80mph. Make sure you seal the edges!

Im hijacking this post. Sorry josh. Seems like I will have to make a template like he did. Above the rub rail is the part thats makin my head swim.. His boat there doesn't have the handles like mine has. Josh post your progress please. I would be interested to see how yours is going.

How did you go about making the template? Ive tried brown craft paper with no luck. It's a lot of mask if we do that.

Is that of the top part of the boat? I would think the side would curve up instead of down

It is a lot of mask... but that's the product to use when making templates for boats. We stock 48" low tack mask specifically for making boat templates. Just work the cost into your bid. Mask isn't that expensive.

Don't you guys asking these question do attempt to do your own research or read the information someone points out to you? Or do you just want someone to do every thing for you!

One thing to consider in doing the template too is that if you are doing a 20 ft boat you need to be able to layout the 20 ft sheet on a (20ft) wall and need to get far enough away to get a pic of it or do it in sections. How big is your shop?

You also need to lift at least the rear of the boat off the trailer which requires a winch or creative jacking that you don't want to get wrong!
Safety first!

Boats are different animals so do your homework before attempting one.

Thats the area below the rub rail. I just used measurements for the gunwales.

or maybe I've done the research on available information on signs 101 and specifically asked if anyone had a PDF copy of the wraps magazine that stated the process (although based on your post above, it's highly unlikely that you read the initial post in the first place). I asked for a step by step process....I'm sure that wouldn't help anybody out...would it.

Signs 101 is a place that helps a lot of people out. My main frustration with a few idiots on the site is that they always have to put in their opinions or 2 cents worth when it doesn't help or have anything to do with topic at hand. They always flame someone and talk about how dumb they are, why didn't they do their research etc.. Why not refrain from posting unless you have some helpful, or useful information about the topic?

this isn't meant to change the subject of this thread, so please don't reply otherwise....just know not all the questions are coming from novice people who want you to work for free.

On with boat wrap suggestions / techniques!

josh I put on medium tack paper for a template. Its tough to do alone. I'm getting a few creases in the paper. But Im going to duplicate what parkedcar showed in post #4. Are you going to wrap a boat soon? Im in the middle of one right now and a little terrified. Do you want me to post my results here, or should I start my own thread. I'm a newbie but I still know that I highjacked your post. Thanks

I think that would be a great move....

I'm trying to figure on how to install the mask in order to get an accurate template.

I've tried it on big brute trash cans before (the part under the lip) with no success.

ok here it is step by step. So far I put paper tape on. outlined it with grease pencil and blue painters tape. peeled it and added baby powder to it to keep it from sticking to itself. flattened it on the wall and shot a picture. One step at a time. I'm still scratching my head when I think about doing the gunwales. I hope parkedcar reads this so he could elaborate on his method.

I make my templates out of backing paper that comes out of the laminator. You can vitually make it any size you want, plus it will be nice and straight on the bottom. Then I mark the contour of the area to be wrapped with a small dot every 2 feet. When I bring back the template to the shop I can lay it out on the floor and simply measure every dot from the bottom of the template which is every 2 feet. set your guide linhes in Photoshop every 2 feet, then measure up fom the bottom and paint a dot just like your template. Makes it pretty quick and dirty. Then all you have to do is use the pen tool to connect the dots and draw yourself a perfect outline of the contour or the boat. It totally compensates for the radical curves too!
