What was that trick in Acrobat?

I have a file that in Acrobat looks great, and is exactly what I need, but it apparently isn't "Outlined" and so when I open it in Illustrator, I lose everything, and it goes to my default fonts. I did a search for the trick someone talked about how to solve this issue, but I can't find it, or think of the right thing to search for apparently. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

open new illustrator doc. place pdf. while still selected go under:

object / flatten transparency.

select convert fonts to outlines and move the slider all the way to the vector side.

vector doctor posted that. the trick worked for me several times.

nice! I didnt know about that one, always had to rasterize it at the final resolution in photoshop. I wonder why it will intrepret the fonts in placed files but not opened ones.
