Worst employee you've had to let go?

NGL, this kinda sounds like a blast :Cool 2:
It was.

This was 20 years ago - in a warehouse where we picked tools and shipped them out.... So a dozen or so people on order pickers (stand up forklifts kinds). We had a game where you could slingshot eachother with those plastic BBS if you could get within 20 ft and weren't noticed, and we're both stationary.

It was fun, and I'll admit dangerous! Not too bad with the plastic BBS but definately not work safe.

2 people found a bunch of ball bearings and started shooting eachother with them... The first one to land a hit broke the others finger - I was just a lead hand back then, with a serious injury requiring the hospital it couldn't be kept hidden...

Everyone did it, but after that day and 2 people getting fired no one else did again....

Since that day I've stopped doing stupid shit at work though! Usually you do it in pairs, or multiples... And then it's not just your job at risk.

Myself. For the last few years I've been complaining about AI generated art and been an advocate of out-sourcing everything. The youngsters spend all day on their computer and gave me dirty looks when I asked them to go out on a repair job or installation. They insisted I go along so I could tell them what to do (they know what to do, they just don't want to). Now that I'm no longer there they have begun to figure it out themselves (I'm still only a phone call away – excuse me: text message). Now they like me again. Firing myself was the best decision I ever made!

We have about 25ish employees total. I feel like I would fire half of them if they were my employees - I run a side business doing printing...and I told the owner I would NEVER hire an employee after being in charge of them, Even if the employee makes more than it costs in wasted material, screwing around on phones, etc.... They'd piss me off so much I'd fire them all. When I leave this job, I'll have a little group of customers built up and it'll just be me working, retiring at a young age making enough to get by!
We had 9 at once but went through them pretty quickly. Out of all of them, 2 were pretty good, the rest not so much.

The last place I worked we had an employee who'd call in sick every other week. Well he wouldn't call in... His mom would call him in sick. He was in his 20s.

It was always on a Friday or Monday ... We eventually had to tell her that while we appreciate her looking after her son, he's an adult now and if he was sick or absent he had to call in himself in order to do it as per policy.

2 weeks later she called him in sick with strep throat and unable to talk :roflmao:

2 months later he was let go for having a slingshot fight with ball bearings with another employee ... They were both driving. Around on forklifts shooting at eachother, one got a broken finger because they got hit right in the finger... Both got fired.
If we could only find a cure for the illness that only happens on Monday and Friday we would be rich!!!

We recently found out one of our employees have been coming in late... but is always clocked in 10-15 minutes before her start time. So this past weekend I've been tasked at finding out how - Long story short... Her and another employees time cards match every single day, down to the minute... even though one shows up 15 minutes later, I checked our outdoor cameras everyday for the past 2 weeks to see when the employee has been ariving, and every day it's 5 or so minutes late... but everyday, she's clocked in before the start time. So I had to pull a few months worth of time cards, and sure enough... These 2 employees match their clock in 95 out of 100 clock ins. (I hate time cards, but we have about 25 employees... 5 of whom work slightly odd hours due to life circumstances, So its the only way to get accurate hours for the people who work 5 hours one day, 6 the next, 6 and a half the next, etc).

Now we have the 1 employee on Camera being late, but being clocked in early... so she's 100% fired. We don't have Cameras by the time clocks, just at the doors because theyre meant to be security cameras...so we dont have definitive proof on the person clocking her in, but it's pretty obvious - Not sure she will be getting fired since we can't prove it.... These are employees we've had for 25 years, long before my time - But they know theres zero tolerance for clocking someone in... I have no idea how long it's been going on... Could be weeks/months of stolen time.... The owner is rightfully pissed and wanted to fire them the moment he found out on Friday, but I made him mull it over on the weekend, and said right now it's just a suspicion (Employee #2 was seeing showing up 5 minutes late, yet clocked in 15 mins early), and even though I'm 99% sure its whats going on, we should have proof before terminating someone, especially before X-mas... So now I have a meeting for later today with all the evidence to determine when, how, and whether its going to be 1, or 2 of them being let go... People who've been here forever, who know the business in and out... one of our only screenprinters, 25 years of knowledge lost.... We're a very lenient company, I have 2 employees who show up 10 minutes late everyday, They dont get paid for those 10 minutes... but they talked to us about it, and we told them it was fine to be late since we know the situation, but they would have to work 10 mins through lunch, 10 mins at the end of the day, or not get paid for those 10 minutes to make it fair for everyone. Now we're going to a badge / photo time clock instead of paper one to prevent it from happening again as well... I don't think anyone else would do it, but I never would have thought these 2 would do it either.

First people fired from this company in the 10+ years I've been here.... It sucks firing people you've known for 10 years! My last job at a non printing company, I've had to fire people for refusing to do work... getting into fights... doing donuts on forklifts / smashing into racks, etc.... But nothing like this. Todays going to be a shitty day!

So... Whats youre "I didn't want to, but had to" fire people moment? :roflmao:
Hahahaha I did that 28 years ago for my friend. Young and stupid :)

Well, today was D-day.

Called the 2 employees in... Explained why they were there, how it sucks that it has to happen to people who have been there for 25 years, but the fact that they've been there for 25 years means they knew better.... Neither of them said a word, just read the paperwork we handed to them. When we asked if they had anything to say... The person doing the punching said "yes... We do lunch eachother in, but we're always on time and never late". ... Which pissed the owner off because we have video proof of the person who she clocks in being late at least half the time.... Only by a few minutes, but still.... So he mentioned the cameras and said we have proof, but that's not even the point, clocking eachother in even if they're on time is wrong and a fireable offense.... She just said "ok" and that was that.

Gut wrenching! I didn't sleep at all last night. I've known both these people for 2 years, i used to carpool with one for 3 years everyday.... I told them both I wished they weren't getting fired, but I can't argue against a firing when there's so much evidence of time clock theft... And as much as I like them, I wouldn't care if it were my best friend.... Stealing is wrong, no matter the amount, so no matter how much I wish it wasn't happening, I understood and supported it. Told them I'd write them both glowing recommendation letters, and be willing to be a reference, because I didn't believe they were bad employees, they just did something stupid, and they would learn from this and not do it again.

I reached out afterwards via text, after waiting and hour or two to let them calm down and let things sink in and let them know when they're ready and if they want to reach out we could talk more about things - more on a personal level / reference capacity than anything to do with the company.

Tomorrow will be when the real drama starts!

I know I've said it before. But it just sucks losing a 25 year long employee over something so stupid. Christmas lunch, heck just showing up to work is going to feel completely different for a long time....

Can't wait until I retire and become a 1 man shop and won't have to deal with employees or get close to them :roflmao:

Not a firing story, just dumb as f*ck
Outside guy we hired with no experience, but he was a strong back and seldomly said no, so we kept him on for a while. He'd call in on occasion, and always had the most over the top excuse, but he'd come in the following day and carry on. Getting closer to the end of his tenure here, he called in because his mom hit her head and died. About a week later he disappeared and stopped coming in. Got a call from his dad, wanting to know if we'd heard from him, because he hadn't. Nope, sorry, it's been so many days, yadda yadda. He calls again for a couple more days. Then a lady calls. Asks about Stu. I say Stu hasn't been in since about a week after his mom passed away... this lady was not thrilled, mostly that her son had lied about her being dead...

That ended a little happier than I thought it would. I thought you were gonna say he killed her.

Dammit, make it faster!!
What do you do if you hire an employee with a chronically ill spouse who needs to take frequent unscheduled time off due to care for them? Just curious.
When I was "forced" to retire from the military I was in panic mode as I had not secured a job yet. First place I called was a sign shop. Interviewed and was hired. Wasn't a month or so after that my wife needed long radiation treatments out of state. Thank god my employer was understanding. I must have been out like a month at a time on 2 or 3 occasions.
That was 21 years ago. Still here!
p.s. I've seen many come and go for various reasons.

Sounds like they knew they were in the wrong, unfortunately. Sorry you had to go through that during the holidays but you did the right thing. Very nice of you to agree to write them both a letter of recommendation. Hopefully the rest of the year goes smoother!

My son had to fire a gal this fall from his landscape business. She was an awesome employee, could hook up trailers, drive the trucks with trailers, fix the lawnmowers. But, he started getting calls that grass wasn't cut on her route. He would ask her and she said she did it or would say she showed up right after the people called, etc. Two weeks pass and these people called again. He finds out she was picking up the truck and trailer every morning and taking it home and parking it. Then she would bring it back each night as if she just finished up. She just called him this week to see if he was willing to hire her back. He said no LOL

I convinced one of our young installers that my mom was dead so he couldn't use "your mom" jokes on me. Lasted about a year until I slipped up.

We had a kid that would greet other employees with "Oh hi Mark" like Tommy Wiseau in The Room. Gets reeeeeeeeealy old after hearing it 20-30 times every day. Thankfully he didn't last long.
