  1. Illustrator CC default settings

To hide the transparency grid go the View menu and select Hide Transparency Grid. To show or hide the crosshair settings go into the Artboard palette, select the flyout menu for Artboard Options. The better approach: in the New Document dialog box, go to the Print tab, select one of the...
  2. Discussion What's the most common design mistake you see made in sign design?

I don't understand distorted fonts? I've been in the sign business for nearly 30 years and have several years of graphic design experience prior to that. I'm no ****king rookie. And I do understand the malpractice of people squeezing and stretching type. I refuse to let up on my hatred of it...
  3. No workers anywhere. Hint, we are in the PRC (People's Republic of California)

Anymore, working on passenger vehicles or commercial trucks is turning into as much an IT job as it is a grease-monkey job. My brother has probably spent more time in continuing education style training classes for new Freightliner models over the years than some people have put into their...
  4. No workers anywhere. Hint, we are in the PRC (People's Republic of California)

Hell, I question the value of even going to college anymore. My brother is a diesel truck mechanic, has just a high school education, but makes a lot more per hour than many college educated people. Other skilled trades can pay pretty well. The inflation rate on college tuition is far above...
  5. No workers anywhere. Hint, we are in the PRC (People's Republic of California)

Sounds like gentrification to me. Where are all the people who staff the service businesses in that 5th Safest City living? Probably not there. Young adults being stuck is a common problem. It's pretty absurd if someone graduates from college but has to move back in with parents because he's...
  6. No workers anywhere. Hint, we are in the PRC (People's Republic of California)

Let market forces take care things? That isn't happening with these zoning setups and other similar methods (like what Houston uses). Most American cities allow only certain kinds of housing to be built across vast parts of a city. There isn't any variety, certainly not with anything new being...
  7. Simple font but hard to match

Gotham is not cheap to buy legitimately. $300 for all 16 styles in the standard width. $996 for that and the Condensed, XNarrow and Narrow families. It's too bad Tobias Frere Jones was not able to take the typefaces he designed at the H&FJ foundry before he and Jonathan Hoefler had their big...
  8. Florence Alabama - New city logo

I guess it's a gusty choice? My first impression of the "F!" icon thing was someone shouting the F-bomb at the top of their lungs. Adding the "rence" part just sounds like someone is really mad at someone named "Rence."
  9. Discussion What's the most common design mistake you see made in sign design?

On the topic of kerning (or letter spacing, tracking) here's one thing I find increasingly annoying: bad numeral spacing. Many older font files will have only one set of numerals and their spacing will by default be set with tabular lining. That's great for number lists in columns, spreadsheets...
  10. No workers anywhere. Hint, we are in the PRC (People's Republic of California)

Here in Lawton I see quite a few Black people of all ages wearing face masks in public. Yesterday at the YMCA I saw a couple Black women wearing masks while getting in their workouts. Lately I've seen lots of white people around town wearing masks in public too, but most of those people are in...
  11. No workers anywhere. Hint, we are in the PRC (People's Republic of California)

We went for several months with one of our design/production jobs left open. A decent number of people applied, but they all kept washing out in various respects. It's kind of surprising just how bad computer literacy is these days even though most people are hauling around smart phones and...
  12. No workers anywhere. Hint, we are in the PRC (People's Republic of California)

The situation is a lot more complicated than that. One BIG factor in this shortfall of service industry workers: retirement. Lots of age 65 and older people have been working at Walmart, McDonalds, etc to supplement their income. Now many are saying it's not worth the trouble. And then there is...
  13. Is Gerber stll solidly in the Sign Business?

If it gets anymore difficult or expensive to buy Gerber-brand roll vinyl in specific opaque or translucent colors they're not going to stay in that business much longer. So much sign work is just getting knee-jerk output via large format digital printers more and more, even if the stuff doesn't...
  14. Need Help Font help, again.......

Looks like a squeezed version of Saddlebag to me.
  15. Illustrator problem when saving a vector to EPS

Obviously there is some kind of variable to the object(s) you're trying to save in EPS format which Illustrator will not allow. If transparency effects aren't the issue and we can't figure out what's what then obviously saving all the files in PDF format would be the best solution. Mixing...
  16. Illustrator problem when saving a vector to EPS

Do you have any transparency effects applied to any of the objects, including the gradient fill? The EPS format does not support transparency. I also wonder if some of the more recently added features in Illustrator, such as free-form gradients, are supported by the EPS format. They all work in PDF.
  17. Gradients

Gradients in vector-based objects can be hit or miss with having banding issues in the print output. Some of it depends on the application used to create the graphics. The printer and/or RIP can be a factor too. Generally I get the best results printing vector gradients when using Adobe...
  18. Help with a font look in illustrator

Using Art Brushes is a pretty easy thing to do. I prefer using it for certain text effects as opposed to the usual text on path effects because the art brush effects can yield more natural looking results. All the horizontal stems on letters will conform the curve of a given path in an art brush...
  19. Adobe CC Licensing Error

Probably not until he upgrades to Windows 10.
  20. Help with a font look in illustrator

Actually the typeface in question looks more like a condensed weight of Motter Corpus, not Passion One. Anyway, the effects on the lettering can be accomplished using a combination of the Path Offset command for the outline effects and inner bevel for the shading functions. Take your pick on...
