Done lot's of sandblast etch glass. I prefer to use cheap paint mask for it. It is a little thicker and is easier to remove especially in intricate designs. We use a cheap handheld gravity fed blaster filled with fine aluminum oxide Blast at about 35 psi no problem. hope this helps

It's not the encoder strip that is the problem. It's likely the carriage cable. This is a known problem for that machine, Search around the threads on this forum and you find it.
