I am letting my subscription expire. Out of respect, I'll keep my reasons unpublished but I would gladly respond should they happen to issue a readership survery.

Yep...and when they fire it up hot enough to fend off a bitterly cold day, that's when they get into trouble. I observed creosote oozing like thick molasses from the stove pipe joints on a neighbor's stove several years ago. I still can't figure out how he avoided chimney fires.

Au contraire...with all due respect, even well-seasoned dry deciduous wood has the potential to produce creosote if the fire is choked back far enough.

He mentions the differences between “black oven” and “white oven” masonry heaters. The former routes the flue gasses through the monolith of masonry, whereas the latter is indirectly warmed by the flue gasses and radiant heat.
My setup would be considered a white oven. The attached photo...
That was an interesting video and the examples are stunning, but he doesn't mention how he cleans out the creosote. From the looks of it, it would be impossible to do so. Regardless of the efficiency, it will still have creosote along with soot and flyash that will accumulate in the hardest to...
After royally losing my tail on a few jobs this year, I’ve been working on a solution to help us quickly evaluate future projects. Looking back, it basically boils down to my somewhat cavalier and quick response of “...Yeah, we can do that...” that has been cause of our trouble.
I don’t...
I have some of the sample color chart folders from 3M and Avery and I believe they include the lifespan of each product. Pricing is another thing altogether. If you're going to do anything, maybe make a cheat sheet for pricing that corresponds to their sample charts.

For those of us who hover around the middle, I'd be interested in knowing how many are business owners or managers. That would explain a lot. And yes, I'm an owner, entrepreneur and innovator...neatly packaged in a "one man show".

Excellent topic, and three cheers for all the other autodidacts here on the forum. As a student, my later grade school years were pure torture and I struggled well in to my early high school years before my love for learning kicked in. Now, learning is an addiction I've come to embrace and...
Yep, they're solid...we used to have a local block maker and they were only 99 cents each. It was a pretty cheap fix for all the money they've saved over the years.

There's a line about 50 miles north of me where everything has been out since last week and is expected to be out for a few more days. We dodged the bullet this time. See my post in another thread for how we heat our shop.
When the power goes out and we're not in the middle of a rush job...
What you're seeing is the cast iron grate support in the back of the stove...which, ironically, looks a little bit like my yellow lab.
To all our PETA members, no animals were harmed in the aforementioned photo.

I heat with wood and if I had my preference it would be an outdoor furnace...but our stove is indoors. Since air is a poor conductor of heat, I dry stacked about 5,000 pounds of cement blocks around it to help retain and evenly distribute the heat...kinda like a heat "savings account" that pays...
