A failed PC board on the print carriage will do that. Did you power down will tinkering with the machine? If not, did you remove the ribbon connector to the magenta print head and then plug it back in = trashed PC board (been there, done that)?
Side note: you're on the verge of needing to...
I do thousands of stickers, mostly 4" size, kiss cut and then sliced into rectangles with a CARL DC250 cutter with my contact info on them. I get $0.99 each for 100, $0.89 each for 250, $0.79 each for 500 and $0.59 each for 1000. It took years to perfect a grid to use for cutting guidance...

I changed the main board on my XC-540. Piece of cake. Take lots of photos with your cell phone in case you have...
If it's an old machine (and an old hard drive) it's worth 15 minutes of your time to:
1. Open the box.
2. Remove the hard drive.
3. Look for where the center of the drive's disk(s) are. Older drives had a sticker on one side that covered a bearing there. Gently peel the sticker back part way...
Looks like the invoice was printed on a (very old) 9 pin printer. You can count 7 dots in the right side of "a" in Tax and add 2 more to get to the top of "T". I had one once. An EPSON. Darn near bullet proof. It never did die - just became obsolete.
Then along came 24 pin printers and they...
Here is the text version of what you see in the video provided by crny1:
(Copy, save, print for future reference or to be able to help someone else.)
It's called LIMIT INITIALIZE. Basically when the machine "loses" itself, it has to be retold where to start printing, and how wide the printer is...
Day 1
I have been struggling with this for a few days, as well. "Not Connected" error, "Incompatible Ink"error (after 11 years), failure to print: I removed 8 screws on XC-540, pulled the cover from the PC boards and positioned a fan on a step ladder to blow over the boards (there are TWO...
What did you learn from Roland? I'm having the same issue since approx Nov 14. Using dedicated Win 7 box, not internet connection to keep it isolated. It's crazy.

Seem to have overcome "Not Connected" error (for the time being) but nothing prints. The job looks normal but the printing...
Check out sign-in-china.com. I've used them several times for print heads for my XC-540. Some say they're refurbished and sold as new. I don't really care as I don't use my machine a great deal, they work fine, and the price is right.
What would you do if you drove to work every day and parked outside for the same 5 months? (Doesn't make any difference if you're there or not there. It's 5 more months of sun.)
My machine hums 24 hrs a day. The main power needs to be on. I leave the soft power on (on the front right) so it can wake up and suck a little ink through the heads. If you don't use your machine much, do a TEST PRINT every other day to make each nozzle fire on the print heads. Ink is CHEAP...
Did YOU change the print head? It appears to be placed too far to one side. Did you use the manual and make the timing adjustments for the head so it fires at the right times (and therefore the right position(s))?
Heavy ink such as "rich" black (black + other colors) seems to be the worst for me. I add a note in gray along the edge at 6 or 7 point font size: "Shrinkage is normal, especially along the edge." They're still unsightly but I hope this helps with educating my customer(s). Most come back for...
