  1. How to be a Successful Sign Shop

    That's what soccer is for.
  2. To Laminate or not-window perf

That's a commercial vehicle. Not a passenger vehicle. For some things they have more lax regulations. (Because it helps with commerce) And why would you put window film on a solid van? We are talking about glass, safety and visibility.
  3. Which vinyl to use? So many options

The air release pattern is formed on the release liner. Gives the adhesive layer grooves and channels that you can press air out. The channels flatten out when you apply pressure with the squeegee.
  4. To Laminate or not-window perf

Lazy is another good reason not to laminate with optically clear over window perf. Because it's way easier to install without it. Plus it takes a special skill to not get squeegee marks on the lam over the film when applying it. But that's too hard.
  5. To Laminate or not-window perf

I've heard cases where in some states that have real strict tint laws, even on the rear of the vehicle, they can give you grief over having window perf. Because what's the light transmittance of window perf? Depends on where the meter sensor is placed. They could make it have a reading of 0%. If...
  6. To Laminate or not-window perf

Greed and cheapness run rampant through the sign and wrap world. I get it, optically clear lamination is expensive. But I hope one of the hacks gets caught out on a huge litigious lawsuit. That would make my day. When messing with people's lives and their vehicles, there's more responsibility on...
  7. To Laminate or not-window perf

Here's a recommendation from Jerry, worded so it's easy to understand: Lamination ensures visibility: If applied without lamination, the negative space can be filled with dust, dirt or rainwater. If someone is driving a vehicle with unlaminated perforated vinyl on the windows and it starts to...
  8. To Laminate or not-window perf

Yes... but again... CLEAR AND UNOBSTRUCTED VIEW is repeated over and over again. Why would you not want to provide that to your customers? Greed? Cheapness? Do you need a specific law or statute to tell you to do the right thing by your clients?

I'm going to be starting on my 5.5' X 11' foot lighted roller table kits next month! Stay tuned! :thumb:
  10. To Laminate or not-window perf

Don't forget that some states say that if you do block out the side windows you have to have a commercial license. Perf could apply, depending on who pulled you over and what judge you got.
  11. To Laminate or not-window perf

OK, under the DMV VC Subsection 26708 (a) (1-3) 26708. (a) (1) A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows.(2) A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with any object or...
  12. To Laminate or not-window perf

Why would you want to open yourself up to lawsuits if your customer gets into an accident because of muddy/blurry visual impairment? Seriously? Because you were too cheap to do things right? Hang on, I'll look for the statute. I recall it was amended into some bylaws around 2008. Since I have...
  13. Sign Shop Waste: Illusion of Ecology

I think we can make a strong case for direct to substrate flatbed printers, using LED UV lighting a good green solution for printing. Secondly, I forgot all about the Speed Press, that's a great idea for applying vinyl instead of rolls of masking. I think the silicone release liner paper could...
  14. To Laminate or not-window perf

It's the law (at least in the states that I've installed them) Must have optically clear lamination if going on a vehicle. Holes don't fill up with dirt obscuring vision once moisture is applied.
  15. Sign Shop Waste: Illusion of Ecology

Since I got started in this industry some 20+ years ago, even as a broom pusher and trash taker-outer I've noticed the exorbitant amounts of trash that a small sign shop can produce. It's always bugged me... the endless silicone paper that seems to always flow over the dumpster. The large boxes...

  17. Cost per Square Foot

Fine... it's going to run you between .26¢ - .32¢ per sq. ft. (Don't forget to add in the additional draw from your power meter because of the extra heat the machine needs to cure the inks) To cover 1 sq ft it takes anywhere between 0.9ml – 1.5ml of ink. So, figure that out based on average...

  19. Tender Sites for job picking/bidding?

You sell based on experience in the field, competency in materials application and equipment usage, turn-around/time to market/install.
