I was working for a company years ago and installed a chinese restaurant sign and when we went to collect...he forgot how to speak english. The boss took the loss...the food sucked so eating up any lost profits was out of the question.
Yup! while browsing, burnt a Digiornos slap up I mean it was on fire! put it out and it burst into flames again. Spent 30-40 minutes blowing smoke out with a leaf blower. When I threw it out the back door smoking the wife said don't the dog will get it, my reply was I promise the dog won't touch it.
I have never mismeasured something to cost me money but I did learn to use inches only.
I once had written a face size down in feet & inches and 6'1" was mistaken for 61" yup to short and my fault, after I looked at the sheet I could see where it was easily mistaken.
Also had a rope work loose...
This is important in any industry...and we are not even in the .100's / hundred thousandths. Imagine misreading a micrometer on a critical gasket that causes a space shuttle to go boom!
" you're kidding right" 20' to top' it can be an expensive mistake..I would think the business owner but that is between them, I'm just putting them in.

It is old and heavy duty, I think I've cut 080 with it before

I think your question has been indirectly answered and I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. I have never had that problem although I did have a "friend" ha! years ago steal my portfolio to use as his sales instrument. There is always a chance someone will do what you're concerned about but...
