  1. What to charge for flatbed cutting?

Price it till they holler, then back off a dollar. You paid 80K for the automation aspect of the machine, the bells and whistles so to speak. Routing is actually very cheap if you got a dedicated machine to do just that. But a finished sign costs good money. Don't commoditize your work down to...
  2. What to charge for flatbed cutting?

OK... just tried to help. The point is, no matter how you set up your files to be cut, a proper CAM software will still show you how long it takes to cut. The method you describe is even easier than what I just did. So really, I don't see the issue in figuring out an estimation? Why can't you...
  3. What to charge for flatbed cutting?

Now obviously I'm a big fan of V-Carve and Aspire from Vectric. See how fast that was. You don't have to know CAM stuff, and can still design in your favorite vector software. I made the logo in Illustrator, saved as an .eps the opened windows, and imported it in to V-Carve Pro. Plus the...
  4. What to charge for flatbed cutting?

Alright, check it... I took me longer to come up with a fake sign design, than it did to show you the creation of tool paths etc... Now if you notice in the lower right hand of the screen it tells me how long it will take to cut this out. Obviously an estimate, if I played around with the...
  5. What to charge for flatbed cutting?

Well, you shouldn't be designing on spec in the first place. Seems to me that you should already have a deposit on hand or have been doing other work for the client. And it doesn't take that long to come up with a basic quote to do cut paths and tool changes etc... Like 5-10 min tops.
  6. Oversized Backlit Printing

OK, great! I'll give you an overview of my project... the room is about 13x16, and what we are doing is removing all the drop in ceiling tiles and replacing them with Dibond that has rows of RGB LEDs affixed to them. We want to stretch some translucent fabric across the whole room, giving a...
  7. Oversized Backlit Printing

Does the material stretch at all? In either the warp or weft?
  8. Oversized Backlit Printing

Hey <-- See what I did there :ROFLMAO: I'm actually in the market for some kind of back lit fabric. My current supplier can't so as wide as I need. But 197" would do it for me. Are you offering the material rolls, or printing on them or selling by the lineal foot?
  9. email Etiquette

I hate VM, and never listen to them. So I have it turned off on my phone. If I know you, I'll answer. If I can't I'll see the missed call. If you need to get ahold of me, you can text me, or send me an email. Maybe I'm more hip and trendy than a lot of you, but I've embraced the new forms of...
  10. Cheapest place to buy sign standoffs?

Get a lathe, make your own! :ROFLMAO: While I've actually done that many times, the ones from Outwater vary in quality. Most of the really cheap ones are tubes with caps. I don't mean machined caps. They are literally like bottle caps that just snap on. Their middle and higher priced ones are...
  11. What to charge for flatbed cutting?

Typically most CAM programs will tell you how long it will take to cut something. Then use that time vs. your shop rate + substrate costs down to the sq. ft. (My price sheet says $1.50 per minute + 4x8 sheet of substrate)
  12. email Etiquette

Ugghh... I hate that when people call me "chief" or "boss". It's always the same types of people too. The guy at the auto parts counter, the metal supply place, the hardware store, the forklift driver and on and on... Have some dignity and self respect man! It's a lazy sign of fake respect.
  13. email Etiquette

Whooaa Nelly... Hay There Pardner! Don't knock that stuff... it's not all woo hoo. I've turned my personal life around and my professional just through changing the way I thought. I've manifested pieces of equipment out of thin air, clients, money, an awesome woman! All because of the way I...
  14. Cast Hell

One thing I've learned about vinyl and glass, is you should never be in such a hurry to pull off the premask too fast. Let the adhesive set-up a bit, and then when you do peel the masking, peel 180° flat. Because even the act of removing masking can introduce bubbles. Especially if you do a wet...
  15. outdated software

The software shouldn't really matter, as long as it can output plotter language. (HPGL etc) I'm currently running a 20+ year old Graphtech on a new Mac, and only using SignCut as my plotter connecting software. But I can tell you from experience, it's the cables that matter the most. And as you...

    Hey... How You Doin'?
  17. outdated software

You by chance didn't happen to change the cables coming from the plotter to the computer? Like the Serial Cable for a new shiny one?
  18. Anyone know what this is?

The black things are those bendy arms. Like on some small LED lights I've got for my mtn bike.
  19. Brand New Window Films on the Market!!!

I'd have to see it in person on glass, from both sides. The one nice thing about regular perf is that you don't see any image or ink from looking out from the inside. I'd hope this stuff is optically clear so looking out wouldn't be blurry. But secondly, you'd be looking through various shades...
  20. Purchasing a Roland-BN20. Any advice?

That prints white and metallic ink? I don't think so. You gotta look at it from the OP's perspective. Maybe that's their budget, and all they see are Roland's awesome bullet sales points. Telling them to not even bother unless they have at least $30k isn't exactly helpful. I think it would be...
