  1. Need Help Owner/Installer

Our industry as well as most and the individuals working within it are as diverse and differently goaled as any. A small, single sign artist doing mostly custom, one off signs in a tourist village somewhere will have quite different goals and approach to their business as someone like yourself...
  2. Need Help Owner/Installer

An owner may not necessarily have to know how to physically do the work they are selling customers, but if they possess even the slightest instinct of self-preservation, they'll make sure they at least teach themselves to be able to see the difference between doing things the right way and...
  3. Dimensional Letters Outside - Thickness/Material?

I found this advertisement in our weekly newspaper for a housing development and they included the monument sign in the ad. This really illustrates the point I was trying to make about excessive standoff on your letters. Especially thin stroked letters. These are spaced so far off the wall, you...
  4. Dimensional Letters Outside - Thickness/Material?

Really good points. We've developed a two tier pricing structure for dimensional letters and try to emphasize the material and finish guarantee that Gemini offers compared to letters we have cut from our neighbor's CNC and then paint. The choice is pretty clear. A 1/2" thick painted PVC letter...
  5. Dimensional Letters Outside - Thickness/Material?

Andy, This advice depends on the typeface you are using and installation condition but a good guide to follow is to try and match your letter thickness to the width of the thinnest stroke. If you have 1/2" thin strokes and use a 1" thick letter, it looks a little unnatural and clumsy. Same...
  6. Lexel & VHB foam tape

Which parts are you joining together? Big flat pieces will take quite a while for LEXEL to cure out, but once it does, it's pretty strong and remains more flexible longer. If they are large flat panels, we use a roller to apply TiteBond 2 polyurethane glue to the entire surface and then...
  7. What happens when you don't get a permit

It's probably because the "mural" doesn't include the business name in it.
  8. Question Heaven help me. What is the name of this font?

The tops of the A's are angled in the original. It's on the tip of my tongue because it's such a common font, just can't make the connection. Old age.
  9. Need suggestions for material to use

Depending on the location and sun exposure, you might get close with one of the 9 year, high performance, cast vinyls, but that recommendation should be weighed with your knowledge of the first two factors. I think the catch is the "looking like new" part of the request. These materials and...
  10. Looking for a particular stock vector flag art

Yeah, I don't know the full letter by letter prohibitions verbatim, but I do know that real flags aren't supposed to touch the ground and if soiled are supposed to be destroyed. Mudding up a 4x4 Jeep would at least casually appear to be crossing the line at least symbolically.
  11. A couple more recent hand-lettered projects...

Exceptionally well done. Super tight rendering, nice margins, letter construction is quite good. Good opacity. You knocked them out of the park!
  12. Suggestions agressive adhesive vinyl

210 costs us $230 for a 54"x150', 215 costs us $398 for a 54"x150'. That's more than "not much more money" where I come from. For not much more money than that, we could use one of the cheaper cast combos.
  13. Painting awnings

The system you've shared is one to be purchased by a full time awning fabricator in order to justify its cost and space requirements. It's also meant for pre-fabricated awning panels, not to letter an already installed awning which is usually the scenario most of us face.
  14. Suggestions agressive adhesive vinyl

I'm all too familiar with the symptoms as well as the fact that it's only our low cost, budget, underbidding competition using cheap house brand materials that its happening to bhere, and after only 2-3 years. In the last several years, we've replaced ZERO signs of our own making and about a...
  15. Painting awnings

I was about to add that good tip. Thanks for thinking of it and sharing.
  16. Painting awnings

I use a 50/50 mix of a good quality water based primer and industrial grade exterior acrylic latex paint for my first coat. I thin it quite a bit so it saturates into the material. That seems to give me a better thin coat and less ridges, build up and overlaps in the final coats. Our shop...
  17. Painting awnings

I just hand lettered a couple of awnings in the last few weeks and as they have always been, Sunbrella awnings are a pain to do any other way but hand lettering. Unless you can coating the working area with some kind of sealer, paint, etc.. vinyl and paint masks will not stick to them.
  18. Suggestions agressive adhesive vinyl

Should I be going to all my customers with 4-5 year old signs that still look great using that combination in a very high UV region and warn them to expect failure any minute?
  19. Looking for a particular stock vector flag art

Doesn't it violate the code for proper usage of the flag to use it in any way other than its original intended purpose?
  20. Need Help Window perf

Does it add anything to to the overall color?
