I would have to charge $35k minimum to break even (no profit for the shop). Where I live there would be no possibility of finding a client with pockets that deep.

On the other hand, I do have the skills and knowledge (a bit rusty, but I have studied with Rick Glawson and Kent Smith and have produced similar products for corporate clients). Nothing more than $5k (about $10k in today's money), and that was a stretch!

I'm not taking anything away from this artist's fabulous skills. I would have to see it up close but it seems like a tremendous job (and a heroic effort)! I'm not too taken with the design; the execution is what steals the show!

Note: transporting a piece like that would be harrowing! I had a piece break once transporting it to the framer's cabinet shop (the cabinet shop had built a cradle for it but it broke anyway). Glue chipping creates uneven tension vectors in the glass making it extremely risky! The guys up in Chicago who did cigar store windows back in the day did their magic on professionally installed heavy-duty float glass (the glass companies would not install a finished piece). There was a (small) market for this in the big cities before neon and electric signs. I certainly would not have it resting on a rickety sawhorse!
