From the perforations on the OP's picture, it appears to be Gerber material (3M). In this case, it has zip to do with the "buying the cheapest vinyl" or "off brands."
3M (Gerber), Avery, Oracal and Arlon all will occasionally have splices. Even the print media. You are just lucky to have never gotten a roll that did.

Well then I am just lucky then.

Being in business since '89 (yeah, 'turning 28 this summer), the worst brand for splices is Avery in my case. Never got splice in 3M / Gerber cast I use a lot or Oracal's. All the boxes coming in are labeled "0 splice". Haven't seen spliced rolls for decade. In my early years, there was a lot...

So it's not "beginner's luck"... probably just luck :D
