a good friend wants us to make some magnetic signs for him
he wants to match dealer paint code (IE:pAR <ON THE DOOR PANEL>)
to a pantone color or CMYK COLOR

I suggested taking my spectratone book and seeing how close a match he can find

is there a database, or some way to convert?

and, no, i don't know what the vehicle is yet

Print out a PMS chart, Take the car color and match it to the PMS chart. Create .pdf with rgb and fill with PMS color, save and print your magnetics.

If you don't find anything, you could get a NIX color sensor and it will give you LAB and CMYK values. Cheaper to just use the swatch book though.

I just learned how to change my title status
Color sensor (if your print profile is accurate), swatch book or better yet print a bunch of close swatches yourself and hold them up to the car. Ideally let the customer decide if they're THAT picky.
There's not really any other reliable way. With automotive paints, even having a paint color mixed from the code there will be slight variations, whether from aging and environmental on the car itself, to slight batch inconsistencies. You try to match fresh paint to a 5 year old car and you'll see what I mean.
It would be wonderful if there was a better solution, but it just doesn't exist.
