...On here actually use Office in any capacity. I haven't used any Word processing program since the early aughts (I have nvim setup for word processing when/if I need it), but I saw this little beauty:

Apparently for Word, it automatically saves to OneDrive by default with the new update (or your favorite cloud hosting provider). The march to desktop Windows being more like Chromebooks is getting closer and closer. Just from how I am seeing things anyway.

you CAN NOT OPEN OR SAVE TO LOCAL STORAGE unless you have the premium product ($12.50/mo. per user)
for $5.you can only save to onedrive
damn near every time you get windows updates it changes your preferences anyway

i often wish we had never updated past that version.
it is much like quickbooks.
every version after quickbooks '95 has been a disappointment.
i don't need quickbooks to balance my "checkbook" for me

Word 97 still works great in my Win 98 VM. I just keep it for Clippy and fire it up whenever I need "help". That and some Elf Bowl as well.

This is why I consider Windows a toy OS. There is no reason for any OS (or any software for that matter) to change preferences for anything that a user did via an update (unless it was a bug). About it's only advantage that it has, is it's 3rd party software/hardware support and even that is waning with the options that are out there.

Considering how much we depend on computers for just about every facet of our lives, long and short, not good for end users.

Typically it just doesn't stop with this. In fact, it's not going to as there are plans for wanting end users to have their OS not on their local computer but on an Azure instance. All the data that you have and that people have on your is going to be on yet another group's server.

We have office but we don't use One Drive. Everything we have is stored on a NAS and that is backed up to a cloud account specifically for backup.

I barely ever need a word processor. When I do, I fire up my old, unsupported, security risk Open Office Writer lol.

I use Word when needed. Yes, the default is OneDrive, I just select the drive I want.

I have all my recipes in OneNote which is saved on OneDrive so I can open them on my phone at the grocery store. Family addresses, personal stuff, all in OneNote and saved in OneDrive for quick access on my phone.
