I read alot on here "you don't charge enough". I understand, but this is a business. First off, if you have a better product you should get more for it. What do other businesses do when WalMart moves in and under-cuts on price? (BTW some Wal Marts are not printing banners and posters). If you have a better product and service you should not worry what other people charge. If you want to compete in business, guess what, price is what 90% of customers look at.

Our shop under-cuts on pricing all the time. The way we do this is that we offer so many different products, from wraps to 6 color textile printing. These days we are more about large orders, so we can do some of these smaller jobs for less money, they are kind of a break from the production work, and sometimes lead to bigger things.

Just my two cents....

So are you asking a question here or not. Thanks for undercutting everyone and being "another one" screwing the industry. Do you see doctors lowering their prices to get jobs from other doctors? No, they all charge high prices, and they all get them too. You keep working twice has hard to make half the money. I hope it works well for ya. Why you'd even admit to this just to tick everyone off is beyond me, especially when you know how most of us already feel.

"First off, if you have a better product you should get more for it."

"Our shop under-cuts on pricing all the time."

Since we have moved to doing larger jobs I work LESS and make more $. Watching our 3 vp's run 10 hours a day and our M&R automatic print shirts is way less work than lettering one or two trucks a day.

On our prints we use oracal 3551, is that an inferior product? This moron only works 9 month a year, so he must be doing something right.

Again, look at what you wrote...

"First off, if you have a better product you should get more for it."

"Our shop under-cuts on pricing all the time."

Right, if you use a high quality material, you should get more for it. No arguement on that point. We use high quality materials on everything we to.

so if this is the case, why do you feel the need to under mind the industry?

I think you guys are missing my point. Doing a high quality sign, say like a monument style, hand crafted with carved letters. Something like that get what you can, cause that is high quality. Now lettering a truck with $10 of vinyl and getting $400 for it is what I am talking about.

even if it only costs $10 in vinyl... the other $390 would go for my operating costs ie: $2,000 mortgage, property taxes, insurance, electric, etc. Then, after all that, I would like to see a little something for myself.

If the industry used to hold it, why lessen it as time goes on? Everything else goes up in price!

About every year or two we get people who buy a plotter and try the sign biz, by cutting their throats we guarantee to be the only ones in a 60 mile radius. So then when someone needs a higher end sign we are the only ones around.

If you don't like that idea of running a biz, be sure not to open a shop in my area.
Did I mention I don't do this for the money anyway, I do it for fun.

Your business model is skewed and you have opened yourself up to a flame fest and when your feelings get hurt you will leave this site. That is my opinion only of course.

I have worked my rear off for 20 plus years, never borrowing a dime to make my biz work. There is no one that can possibly have anything to say to change my biz model. Did I mention I am only 37, so I guess I could be doing this another 30 years.
Can't argue with results, so say what you want. I would put my shop up against any in the country. My feelings won't be hurt, how many other shop owners only work 9-10 month of the year, and vacation the rest?

In " Wealth of Nations " , Adam Smith talks about individual companies becoming specialists in areas and being able to charge less while maintaining a good profit margin because they excel at their craft. This is the basis of capitalism. I see the question here as this, are you diminishing the return on a commodity or a truly special item. I'm in sales and I know that I can't charge as much for a sheet of styrene as I can for a sheet of metallized styrene with a 3M 467MP adhesive on it. Not trying to be argumentative just trying to understand.

I'm separating myself from this thread. You have proven to be incapable of understanding the very basics. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.
