Magnetic Signs Stuck to Truck

Customer came by with the magnetic signs that I sold him printed by 365 and the rubber on the back stuck to the door. When I started to peel it up the rubber remained and the surface vinyl was being pulled off it. I mean time for scraper and adhesive remover and buffing. Looks like a good mornings work and hoping I won't need to buy him a paint job. White truck, signs had black printed background, so they sucked in some heat. We don't live in a hot place though.

Why would you have to re-paint his truck? He should have been taking them off more often, so that doesn't happen.
As long as the customer was TOLD to remove them. In our litigous society, you cannot assume your customer will do the right thing based on common sense, so as the "expert" on what we sell it behooves us to educate the customer to protect ourselves.

I tell people all the time the magnet cannot stay on more than 2 weeks before needing to be washed. The Joint Base here leaves them on for years and just like RiXaX, I gotta peel them off with heat. Took paint off with a few, but they were warned. I wound up putting the same graphic in its place, only a little larger.

Yes this happens. You have to remove magnets every week or two. Clean the back of the magnet and the surface of the vehicle. Over a period of time the magnet can “bond” to the clear coat. Had this happen many years ago.

Check this out….

We tell all of our customers and it is noted on their paperwork.

We give all magnet buyers a sheet that details care of the magnet and vehicle. Yes, if the magnet hurts the vehicle finish, it should be a depreciation expense for the buyer. I mean if they buy vinyl, it's going to going to ghost the finish eventually. And no one gets excited about that because they got advertising value out of it.

But folks who buy magnets are often hobby business people and get upset if their car finish is damaged. And to be fair, the magnet won't damage the finish if they remove and clean it regularly.

Many years ago, we had it happen that a magnet customer sued us for a new paint job. The moisture behind the magnet had seeped into the clear coat. Fortunately, we suggested that the angry customer remove the magnet and the clear coat dried out before we went to court.

Thereafter, we have always provided the sheet detailing the care of the magnet and vehicle and haven't had a problem since.
