There must have been something else wrong with your system. I've been in technology a long time and I've never seen software (virus) effect hardware.

Them malwares and spywares are nasty!!

Ccleaner and AVG anti-virus. BOTH FREE, dump McNortFee immediately. It's useless and a resource hog. buy a copy of Webroot's Spysweeper, but do not set it to run in the background. let AVG update & check daily, use Ccleaner every other day and run Spysweeper weekly. I do HUGE amounts of "suspect" browsing and downloading, and have not had a problem in 5 years using the same exact programs.

Same here, I have ever only heard of one virus that's capable of truly affecting and destroying hardware on a level of having to have the computer replaced. It was an old BIOS bug that tampered with the CPU timing, effectively overclocking it until it burned out.

Rick, did you ever find out the name of the malware affecting your system? If you were able to remove it from your system, what tools or software did you use to do so?

Lately, popups are usually smitfraud.. this one comes in via email cads. Big problem recently.
It s not stopped bye the more popular anti virus softs. AVG will notify you of a problem but not sto[p it all either. A good firewall may alert you and if you are quick to see it you can stop its downloading of its payload.

smitfraud VIRUS ........... I HAVE IT / HAD IT

I tried everything imaginable it will mess your system up.

THE ONLY thing that worked for me was Kaspersky was worth every penny. However it never fixed the color change under my icons on the background.

No other software touched it including AVG.

Try everyones reccomednations but I am confident Kaspersky will work ...... get the trial version first. The virus you have is nasty, not even skilled so called Techies could touch it! I had one of the best IT guys on my maching with his fancy probes and USB plug ins ............. NOTHING happening.

UPDATE: I had the exact same symptoms ... I was just listening to music on a reputable site. NO PORN nothing ..........

If a real techy cannot remove a smitfraud then he is lame.

If this is true then he is more than lame..

I have helped several here on this bb and also repaired over a dozen machine locally. It is not difficult if the techie is competent.

Kaspersky is not the answer. Anti virus software is not the answer.

It takes a specific set of steps and a specific remover, and some manually deleting of files to get it all.. Believe me, it is still there, the messed up icons reveals that fact.. It will return first chance it gets.
