Should I buy a replacement head from digiprint & Install it myself ???

Hi Guys - well my vs540 is missing maybe 10 black nozzle prints -& many (prob 12-15) also deflected - total on both black sets - I'm seeing fuzziness on black printed lines & small items - pretty bad - I've run with it for a while knowing what I see my customers generally don't.

So far my magenta, cyan & yellow have perfect prints - but in the last week I've got a deflection on one of my blue nozzles - and it shows in my prints - as I print alot of solid colors - but it just shows - I barely notice it - my customers won't. So my colors are starting to go now.

Point is - my head is 8 years old & it is time for a new one. I've tried lots of cleaning - new head caps - it's not coming back - it's just age.

I'm considering buying a kit from digiprint & installing the head myself - I'm confident I could do it - have never done it before though.

It will save me prob 1-1.5K over having my dealer install it.

How hard is this to do ? I don't want to change the dampers - I've always run oem ink & continue to do so.

It's really important that all my nozzles on the head are firing & working after I do this. Digiprint gives no warranty for missing nozzles - they do give support
with installation instructions & some help. However no head warranty unless doa.

Is this an easy thing to do ? Upsides - cost savings - any downsides ? anyone out there have a problem with oem heads from digiprint ?

How important is it to put in the head ranking ? (is this just a serial #)

Any help / advice is appreciated. Thanks !

maybe digiprint gets a bad rap on here, but, i have read several threads complaining about them

i have never purchased from them (full disclosure)

i would buy from solventinkjet. i have never had a complaint on any of the heads i bought from them. they always offer advice when needed

I use Digiprint a lot, I just check in chat to see if the part is actually in stock.

That said, heads are easy to screw up. Can you afford the downtime if you end up having to have a tech come in behind you? If this is your 12th printer and the others can easily pick up the slack, experimenting and learning is great.

If doing a new head, you get no warranty whatsoever without doing dampers/cap. Head rank codes are basically firing bias information, no two heads will be exactly the same and the rank codes help run nozzles with ideal settings for their variation in manufacturing.

If you're hell-bent on doing a head swap, pick up a few clunker Epson home printers and play around with those.

REALLY good advice

NOW (i am 71) i let bobby install the heads. the world is a little too blurry for me to do this type of thing, if i don't have to. (my hand isn't that steady any more either)

I love DIYing and people who like to work on their own stuff. But I also understand that playing with the machine in a way that can hurt your main source of income is pretty risky. In the end, it's a decision best left to the person making it, but it's great to go in with advice that will let you know what kind of a risk you are taking and whether or not it is something you're equipped to handle.

Quit buggin' me
Premier Colour hooked me up with a printhead for my Mutoh a few months ago. Good service, good price.
Where I am, there is no printer support, so I know who has to do the repair work when things break.
If I had a choice and I could afford it, I would have someone else do the work. I have enough other things to worry about without adding a blown head or ic board to the list.
Either way, I'd swap out the dampers and the maintenance station cap while the printer is apart. Both are consumables and shouldn't be run until they fail.
It would be like changing the oil in your car and figuring the filter should be good for another 5k or so because it is not leaking.

moonrakercat . If you are just a bit handy, I'd advise you to do it yourself. I follow this guy whose videos have helped inmensely troubleshooting my VG540 aging problems.
The attached video link will give you a pretty good idea on how to do it on your VS540. Good luck!
And for other peeps here. He has videos for vairous Roland printer fixups. Check him out!
