we dont have 90 million cows. we actually have 94.2 million. But that being said, only 9 million are milking cows.
We also only have 28.7 million beef cows...or has william b travis called them, beeves. for food.

we've had to subsidize our cattle industry from other countries because we don't have enough cattle to feed us. Thats why trump has made arrangements with argentina for cattle.
until our cattle supply gets back up.

Canada's population is 41 million vs 340 million... America could destroy us in a heartbeat economy (well, not just economy, in any way imaginable) if they wanted to... Is it really hard to understand why we tarrif certain products, and that we don't want to allow a country that can flood our markets and make us reliant on them? All I hear is milk this, milk that.... Like 99% of products are non tarrifed under NAFTA, only products that are tarrifed are for the national interest.... USA used to be the same with aluminum and lumber, not some blanket tarrif.

I knew I got a sense that you were a Trump supporter. We are both for Tariffs. I'm not arguing with you ikarasu. I'm just saying that tariffs can be used for beneficial purposes. It's a good tool to have in the quiver of a country.

In some ways VAT taxes are like tariffs in that they add administration burden on importers (more than what domestic has to go though), importers must pay VAT upfront at the border before goods clear customs (they only reclaim it later when filing VAT returns which creates a cash flow disadvantage compared to domestic compeitors who collect and remit VAT incrementally), domestic production for export avoids VAT, while imports pay it - structurally similar to how tariffs work, A 10% tariff becomes more costly because you also pay VAT on that 10%.

The U.S. has long argued that VAT rebates on exports give EU exporters an unfair advantage.

The philosophical question:

Is a tax system that exempts exports and taxes imports functionally protectionist, even if it technically treats domestic and foreign goods equally within the country?

Some trade economists argue yes - that VAT's border-adjusted structure has protectionist effects similar to tariffs, even if that's not the intent.

VAT are no taxes on imported products, they apply to anything, domestic products and services too. There are a few different rates for different product groups. And as importers need to pay the tax in advance when importing products, local manufacturers need to pay it too in advance for raw materials, parts and ressources they purchase domestic or abroad. Finally VATs are paid by the consumers who are paying the final balance.

There are a similar thing in the US, the sales taxes. Are the higher tarrifs compensated by lower sales taxes? I don‘t think so. So the consumer pays sales taxes AND higher prices due to tarrifs.

Yes, we have higher taxes in europe. But we have a working social security and health insurance system for all, paid holiday and sickness leaves and so on. I really would not prefer to live in the US.

A lot of usa is brainwashed into thinking healthcare for all is bad for them. Canada, Sweden, Europe... Yes we all have our own health care issues, nothing is perfect.. but it's a heck of a lot better than USA's system. My kid had a heart defect when he was born - the bills were above 200k.... All paid for. I can't imagine having to pay for that out of pocket.... Not to mention USA out of pocket price would probably have gone to 5-600k.

Obamacare has a lot of flaws too and should constantly be tweaked until it worked right, and I'm sure it left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths - healthcare ain't easy, but I still think healthcare is a basic right everyone should have, without fear of losing their house because their appendix decided to burst.

What issues have you heard about Canada's healthcare?

The only issue is the wait times. But if you're willing to go to private and pay on a pocket, like you would in america, you can bypass the wait times. It's triage, if you have a condition that needs looking at right now you get it, if you don't like my coworker who had a hernia he had to wait two months for surgery...

My kid needed seven surgeries, there was no delay. When he broke his arm using the hospital and had it fixed within an hour, I had an 11 mm kidney stone... From hospital visit to whenever that surgery was was less than 2 days, my wife had gallstones after a month they wouldn't go away so they decided she needed surgery, and she got surgery within a week...

A guy at work tripped and broke his pelvis... To that he found out he had bone cancer and that's why It broke. He was in surgery within 2 weeks, been doing a lot of cancer stuff and had follow-up surgeries... Everything paid for, his bill is over a million dollars... He hasn't been back to work since and that was last December, cancer and an accident didn't ruin his life.

Our healthcare does have issues, or our insurance or whatever you want to call it... But you can ask any canadian, you can ask anybody that lives a healthcare country whether they would change it and go to America's system whether it was before or after Obamacare and I'm sure 999 out of 1000 will say no.


I don't know enough about Obamacare to comment on it, I lived in America before Obamacare... But I do know whenever Healthcare comes up America points to Canada and says what a flaw our system is.... But to Canadians it isn't a failure, and all of the talking points that always get thrown around about why it's a failure in America are just wrong, made up hyperbole.


Canada just added free dental, and free prescription drugs as well... So if our system is so bad why do we keep adding on to it and making it better?
