You are mostly right. The correct heraldic term is "lion rampant" and is but one of several heraldic attitudes beasts may take in heraldry.

Pretty sure it's an erect feline of Scottish origin.

Certainly, the Scots used a lion in their coat of arms, but they were neither the first nor the only ones to do so...
