Hey guys, Wondering what type of carbon is used in activated charcoal filters. I read somewhere you can make your own using Aquarium Carbon pellets.

Thanks!

Setting up your own air scrubber? I looked into it a little while ago. Everywhere I went, the response was "Go talk to the potheads at your local hydroponics store, and they'll set you up".

My father used to own the local Lindsay water softener dealer. I helped him out when I lived at home. He used to get that stuff in 50 lb sacks. I know the current owner and I could ask him about the availability and cost of this.

I do believe it is rather cheap in bulk.

lol. that's funny if you read into it a little. that's like asking what type of oxygen you breathe when you walk into walmart. I get the point, but at first i chuckled.

I'm also looking into this. So far I'm seeing the potheads are the most experienced. Youtube has some videos. There's a term they are using. Virgin carbon. Also there's a company that gets it from australia. I agree carbon is carbon. From what I've read. Its all about the power and how much sq.ft. it can cover. If anyone has set up their own systems. Can you give us tips on design? Placement? Materials used and from where?

i've got a delta air filter that hangs between the legs of one of my work tables.

i get the activated charcoal filters for your home from lowe's and just fold and lay them in there. the vacuum hold them in place. that thing can move a lot of air.

Quick question for all you solvent printers... I'm still looking at a carbon filter system. grimco is getting me a price for the units they sell. My question is. There are two options a small one and a larger one. The small on says it covers 1500 sq ft. And larger covers 2500 sq ft.. are these numbers based on a 8 ft ceiling height? I have an open warehouse about 30 ft high. 1300 sq ft. Any suggestions?

Holy. For real?. So does numbers they say is based on a low ceiling height. I cant afford 3 of them now. Just one. I also have to buy a new computer, corel x6, plus we gotta get a a/c repair guy to come do some work on our system. How many pounds of carbon do i need for 1300 sq ft. Open warehouse? Is there a formula or ratio for that

I have an airpura I bought off ebay. 18lbs of carbon in it. Airpura sells the cartridges for a couple hundred bucks. I buy 25 lbs of carbon off ebay and refill the cart once a year.

I am pretty sure the square foot rule is only for air turnover rate
The surface area of the charcoal is dependent on the VOC's in the air.
The more fresh air you have the less air cleaning required.
That is why hoods are used.
Best bet would be to copy a a paint shop .
IAQ is very important if you have employees.
If it is just you, just enjoy the cheap high for short periods of time./ sarc
Just be careful and do not skimp on your or other peoples health.

Haha. Cheap high. No thanks! Yea. Its not just me. And im very concerned about the health reasons so much that I'm still debating es3. Although im ggoing with ss21 for sure. Paint shop huh. Ill have to go check one out. Do you mean hood like a restaurant? I can make that happen. I'm from the restaurant industry. And there's alot of people in my are doing restaurant hoods. But i thought i couldn't vent it to the outside. That's why i was looking for indoor air filter type with activated carbon

You can filter the exhaust cheaper than you can filter the shop.
Paint shops do it.
It might not be any cheaper in the set up , but in the ongoing maint it will be better.
Being in restaurant industry , you know that vents work well.
Just remember !!!!
You have to make up as much air as you exhaust,or your doors will stay open or not open.

Why not build an enclosed room for the printer and run it with negative pressure being filtered to the outside? I have a buddy who built a spray booth in his garage using this technique for clear coating guitar bodies.

He ran a couple of large fans to pull in the air and has it ducted out to a dryer vent with a couple of hepa filters prior to it venting. I think the whole setup was under $1500 room included and a saturday's worth of labor. If you really wanna cover any odors exiting slap one of those air conditioner air freshners in their after the filter. Make all the air exiting smell like gardenia.

Were that permits included as well? I'm not sure we can vent to the outside. Ill check on Monday. And negative pressure? Please elaborate. Also we cant really put walls up. Is there a way to maybe put a roof type awning or clear material like they use to keep cold air in. In large walk-in coolers? Cleaning the shop, ive found alot of dust. So i know thats going to a battle. We have a vent on the roof in the middle of the warehouse. With a fan.so your saying make a hood restaurant style and vent to the outside?. So no carbon filter needed? Or use both?
