it often happens the same thing to me when sending print/cut job with Finecut from Illustrator CS6. I solve this by saving the file in Illustrator CS4 format, open the file with Illustrator CS4 and send the print/cut job with finecut. I don't know why, but CS6/Finecut/Rasterlink combination...

Head strike already happened to me, but this was because the roll was loaded during few hours before I start printing and the vinyl had time to stick to the printer, never had this problem in the middle of a print as far as I remember (I use the take up unit to reroll the vinyl this may help not...

if the demo unit is only 2K less than a new one, either the demo unit price is much too high or you get a really good price on the new one :smile: On the mimaki, yes it is "easy" to change ink setup, but on a Roland VS machine, as far as I know the color setup switch is only possible in factory...

place some pieces of square mate laminate juste over the marks and you'll be fine. I do this for reflective, chrome or fluo vinyls and works all the time.

it could also be a different PCB version, eg some open/short wiring that you don't see. In this way, it would not be possible to just swap some resistors.

the student version does not include VBA, it means many plugins and macros will no work, especially cutting plotter controller plugins. The student version also comes with much less cliparts and templates. I have no precise list of differences but I think that the student version is not...

I own a Mimaki CJV30 with CMYKLcLm and double White SS21 ink, nearly a JV33 with integrated cutter. My opinion: unless you use white ink daily, don't go this road, a real pain to maintain the machine in good shape (printhead, pipes, cart must be shaked every day at least...) and costs a lot...

is this juste related to the chip or the cart itself (mechanics)?

Magisign could be OK but not developped anymore so won't be CS6 and OSX Lion/Mountain Lion compatible.
