This is a weird answer but:- Is your machine in a bright place? Our sc1400d will not read the refference lines if it is in direct sunshine or bright lights. SC

I would have a play about with the settings till you feel comfortable. Also your RIP will override the machine settings so it should be set that way. You are gonna love this machine and you do not need to babysit it either. SC
