We replaced our 5000/5500s with HP z6100 and z6200. Both are very similar to the 5000s and have take up reels.
You can find them as refurbs with warranties or go with whatever the latest version of the z series is.
You may also consider the HP latex printers, much more versatile.
Translucent paint is not that easy to get right, especially without a lightbox to spray on.

How about a welded aluminum angle frame with a flatbed printed ACM or even 3/8" coro sign bolted in place.
The sign can be switched out whenever it starts to show wear.
