    We replaced our 5000/5500s with HP z6100 and z6200. Both are very similar to the 5000s and have take up reels. You can find them as refurbs with warranties or go with whatever the latest version of the z series is. You may also consider the HP latex printers, much more versatile.

    Translucent paint is not that easy to get right, especially without a lightbox to spray on. I wouldv'e started with new faces to begin with. But it sounds like it may be simple enough to sheet the background with translucent vinyl, then cut out the letters and drop them in (with a little trap)...

    Yep, I'd want something that big to have some serious fasteners, preferably lots of bearing surface on the wall and thru bolts with interior plates. When we build shaped signs like that with dibond faces we often use HDU cut offs to make the edge solid. If you've got good metalworking...

    How about a welded aluminum angle frame with a flatbed printed ACM or even 3/8" coro sign bolted in place. The sign can be switched out whenever it starts to show wear.
