  1. Wall graphics

for the wall prepwork - tape a large drywall knife to a broomstick and scrape the entire wall a few times to remove any foreign matter such as roller fuzz, dirt, rocks, dried paint, nail hole domes, etc etc etc. The smoother the wall, the better your graphics will look.
  2. Whats vinyl is used on boats and marine things?

For me, it's not really the "brand" of vinyl, but, the preparation of where the vinyl goes. Every smidgen of wax and other contaminates MUST be removed prior to the application of anything; Paint or Vinyl. Or else, you are looking at premature product failure and/or possibly a 2nd trip to the...
  3. 1st Time Using HDU with CNC Router

Nubler - I used to travel around the country giving educational seminars to small sign shops venturing into the HDU world. The most popular feedback that I received to their success was three things: 1. After processing the sign, take the it outside and spray it with a high stream of water from...
  4. Hand Carved / Hand Painted Artwork / Gold Leaf

very nicely done, Richard. On projects like this, we would like to know all the details; what mater you used, tools, paints, yada yada yada
  5. Garden plaque stakes

Florence, we would love to see some photos during manufacture and when you get them installed
  6. Garden plaque stakes

do you have some kind of power tools like table saw, band saw, etc. that you can make your own ? how long is the expected life time in the elements ? What will the plaques be made of and how thick ?? I would be leaning towards PVC pipe. Even 3/16"x3/4" aluminum flatbar from the Box Store will work.
  7. 1st Time Using HDU with CNC Router

welcome to the forum - it would be best if the new members start your own threads and tell us a little something about your shop, tools, equipment, experience (or lack of) before you "jump in" the deep end of the pool. HDU is not cheap, the learning curve can be expensive. Plan your jobs...
  8. Painting Acrylic on top of cured Marine Spar Varnish

totally agree about the scuffing - I seriously think that is not being done in this case. (I'll double check).
  9. Painting Acrylic on top of cured Marine Spar Varnish

yes sir, Bill - that is the standard method for gilding and 1-Shot lettering enamels. I'm talking about Acrylic water based paint applied to a varnished wood project.
  10. Painting Acrylic on top of cured Marine Spar Varnish

thanks Brad - I'm in the same boat as you. I haven't been keeping up with the advances (degradation) and changes either. I am a painter - I paint things - that's what I do. Probably less than 1% of my signwork and other projects are painted with a brush (I don't spray) been doing it since the...
  11. Painting Acrylic on top of cured Marine Spar Varnish

I know there are "old" posts about this, but, our products and procedures are going through some drastic changes these days with the EPA and other things. Take for example; a routed sign made with cypress, cedar or redwood, properly sealed and clear-coated with 3 coats of Marine Spar Varnish...
  12. Suggestions Airplane graphics

this is one of the 5 planes used in the old TV series "Sky King" (and his niece Penny) which belonged to my friend. The decal was HP vinyl and the painting was 1-Shot enamel on HP vinyl. Gently warmed with a heat gun to conform to the curves. It lasted for two years without any issues before he...
  13. Wolly Gator: Hand Painted and Lettered

nicely done !! VERY nice !! :thumb: Please tell us how you treated the MDO (front, back & edges) before you painted it with the OneShot. (you should go into the sign business).
  14. FedEx graphics install

photos of completed difficult projects are always nice to see.
  15. Font ID needed (1st time asking).

thanks Mike - ohhhhhh no spinning !! strictly resin cast in a rubber mold or sand casting in a foundry (them, not me). I was making or refurbishing military squadron plaques for several years before retirement. I found the original squadron design of my first duty station and with too much time...
  16. Font ID needed (1st time asking).

thanks guys. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and use laser cut out letters. this is how it looks as of now, waiting on the letters. (I'm going with the Minion Pro Bold)
  17. Font ID needed (1st time asking).

wow - that helps a LOT Johnny !! so close that it will fly. This plaque was probably made back in the late '50s - early 60's. So there's no telling where the font came from. Since I've changed a few of the details in the plaque, the "exact" font is not really that critical. But, to have it this...
  18. Font ID needed (1st time asking).

yeah, I've got disks with 25,000 fonts "by name" but for the life of me, I can't find this one. I normally go to the on-line resources like "Font Identifier from Image". I am rebuilding a military squadron plaque and need to have the text in 3/4" plastic letters. The letters "E, S, and 6" are...
  19. Large letters, using only adhesive to adhere to building face.

I was referring to the "process" - not the size of the letters. explore the options with the customer - see what they can "live with" that the O/P can provide and still make a profit. if the building is flat, even 1/8" thick lexan or plexi weighs much less than 3-D letters and can be flush...
  20. Large letters, using only adhesive to adhere to building face.

Lauren - some photos of the building, how high off the ground, what part of the world are you in, etc. how many letters ?? it may not be relevant, but, years ago I had a very similar project. AND - it was on a round surface and the customer did not want "flat" letters on a "round" building and...
