I believe the manufacture says Komatex isn't an outdoor product. Their outdoor product is Komacell. Komacell has a really slick face, where Komatex has a slight texture, if I remember right.

Can you check the permissions on your folders, or folders that contain a file that's giving you an issue? Sounds like one of the folders has the wrong permissions. We store things on a network drive too and not long ago I had issues where any folder created on one computer would cause permission...

I don't do a lot of drop shadows in Illustrator, but I just tried it on on a 2.8GHz i7 running 16 GB of RAM. I made 12" tall text and applied a .25" drop shadow to it and it rendered pretty quickly. Running Mavericks as well. It's not instant, but it was maybe 2 seconds for 8 letters 12" tall...

Seems like that's exactly what I said. No need to seal it afterwards. But you do need to be aware that if it's sitting on the ground and getting dragged around, it's going to scuff the paint and primer off the bottom edge, which will allow water to wick up into it and cause it to fail over...
