Which RIP are you referring to? The Graphtec FC8000 Series comes with Cutting Master and the Roland comes with Cut Studio. If you have Adobe you can use the plug ins for both and they work great.

Price is only high when you don't have the reliable company behind you to support it. Buy a printer for a "great deal" then let me know how your support and service is..You'll eat through that discount REALLY fast when your machine is down and you can't get anyone on the phone.

What problems did the vp have? I hear more technical support and service questions on the older SP models more than the VP. I hardly get any calls on the VP at all.
I may be opening up a really big can of worms here, but I just have to ask..why would you want "cheap" heads for a machine that is such a key part of your business? You can't possible tell me you are going to expect "cheap" heads to run REALLY WELL?
