  1. It was only a few days ago....

same users were praising their $.03/kwH rates while all "those suckers" were fixed at $.09-$.12. Devil's always in the details. Better believe I'da been flipping my main breaker once I saw that rate climbing to $1...let alone let the bill keep running at $9/kwh!?! $300/day in energy costs, eff...
  2. Who makes the best UV LED printer for ada signs

no, DCS just owns the patent for the use of a UV printer to build-up layers of ink to 3D print the Braille/Lettering...or at least the sale of a system that is designed for this purpose. If that's your direction, then I'm sure they're the ones to call in a pinch. Otherwise RasterBraille...
  3. Well, it's finally happening...

i think some of your price difference may be in the vinyl: appears as if you marked-up 50yd rolls of media, printed&laminated, but two 54"x10yd kits would be more than enough to cover i think. make sure you don't leave vinyl bridged over the panel seams. apply-over it with your tiles, but trim...
  4. Temporary/Cheap/EasyRemove material suggestions?

thanks guys! head was spinnin' where to start. that easyDot/glassApeel stuff is pretty neat. still got a sample here that Fellers provided a while back. feels/applies like static cling, but its just a lil' more grab. LOVE IT!
  5. Temporary/Cheap/EasyRemove material suggestions?

After posting, I went to digging through my suppliers websites....currently GF Conept 208 Static cling seems like a proper solution. Came in at half the cost of other static cling options i previously researched.
  6. Temporary/Cheap/EasyRemove material suggestions?

Got about a dozen 25"x66" tabletop glass shadowboxes, that the client wants to cover (opaque or high diffuse) from view, but quickly/easily remove on grand-opening day to reveal the contents within. I don't really do temporary stuff so this category eludes me, any thoughts on cheap options...
  7. Pin Letters - How You Tap Holes

we get our taps from either Grainger or McMasterCarr. make sure you shop "bottom tap", as it has a flat-head that doesn't require you to punch-thru your hole or leave ~1/8-3/16" untapped bottom of the hole. Typical big box hardware stores will just have the standard taps, with the pointed tips...
  8. Looking For Something Obscure

not a unicorn. its been available for quite some time. else, pretty much every vinyl supplier should have a photoluminescent vinyl rolls.
  9. Spike Laser Measuring Tool and Sign Surveys

$500 tool for imprecise measurements? seems legit. square-on photo, and a measurement reference, and I'm already more accurate than the +/- 3% phone app. No need to climb ladder in photo above, bricks are ground level and can be used for scale. And then use it to find dimension of the siding...
  10. Question for people who bid a lot of spec 10 signs.

yeah, i hate these jobs but there's good money to be made if able to keep on top of it.... never fails, however, that verbiage in the contract will ALWAYS hang you with extras. never be the low bidder, its a trap.
  11. Need Help Plotting on Reflective Material

yeah, the reflective material is diffusing/refracting the light to the sensor and confusing it.... i just apply a piece of tape over the registration marks and trace the marks on top with a black/blue solvent ink pen or fine tip sharpie. the bigger the piece of tape the better, as you'll need...
  12. Outgassing?

possible outgassing, as stated above, BUT could be as simple as too much tension on laminate feed....stretching the laminate as it applies, and then wants to curl-back when contour cut.
  13. How do I get back into the Sign Community

+1 to suggestions above, but figured I'd chime-in that themepark signs just screams Sawatzky's Imagination Corporation.
  14. How do you hire?

I'm curious why any student wouldn't also inquire ...why their professor isn't working as a designer :) pay well and you'll attract good employees, pay good employees well and you'll retain great employees, but don't tell me you're a good enough employee to pay well if you expect me to take...
  15. How do you hire?

capitalism has its perks. its your right to offer employment opportunities, his right to refuse your offer, but he'll soon learn how many jobs are available for kids with visual communication degrees and may reconsider if position is still available. colleges are to blame for inflating...
  16. Script fonts are the best fonts

lol, click-bait'd. thanks for playing :) it would have to be one hell of a day for me to wanna come on a font forum to argue. pretty sure the sign community agrees: script < papyrus < comicsans < all other fonts
  17. How do you hire?

we use Indeed and our resources with the unions, although we have a couple employees that originated from a temp agency about a decade ago... but the dozen or so other employees we've hired from temp agencies over the years were either awful or noshows. Would not recommend temp agency route, as...
  18. Max Acrylic flat face size you would use in flat face pole sign.

i stick to ~20sq.ft range, but will push it upwards to 4x8's in a pinch.... but anything greater than 20sqft I go with poly or flexface.
  19. Onyx sending data to printer speed

maybe the printers' onboard ethernet card is your bottleneck?
