  1. latest logo job

Good for you Doug. It's always easier to do one logo for a grand than two for five hundred. Rick had some good examples which captured a little more of what I was saying.
  2. latest logo job

Watch your proportions, and distance legibility. Think iconic, easy to digest. Squint test or even thumbnail test, shows you where it's lacking. The name is problematic since it does not say what they do (the word 'service' is ambiguous). SInce you're wrapping, think more in line with...
  3. eBook started

My next book will be an ebook. I actually spoke to David Carter about it, and even he is not having any more books published. He is actually launching his own publishing company - and all his books will be ebooks from now on. My goal for 2011 is to finish it. Lot of work, not only the writing...
  4. Our new website is up and running!

Once I'm in the gallery, having clicked on a thumb, it navigates fine for me - but I might prefer to have thumbs on buttom. I know you maybe want it in flash, but I'm honestly very happy with ours now being content driven with CMS instead. I also like on ours how I can tell a client to go to a...
  5. Logo design critique

Looking good, but please find a better lowercase A. At a distance and quick glance, it looks like an A. IMHO, the typeface is too cutesy and stylized. There are better alternates.
  6. Our new site went live today too.

That's all good Dan, but if no one finds the site, it really doesn't matter what it says. I'd rather they find the site, and then let the work speak for itself. Bear in mind, most people only read a fraction of the content on any site - they want to see the work more than read about the work.
  7. Our new site went live today too.

Better than your old site for sure Dan. Work of course, is always fabulous. Biggest weak point remains very poor SEO, which is a shame because your desired search terms are very niche, and presumably, would be easier than most to get good organic rankings. The logo placement, and then text to...
  8. Our new website is up and running!

LOL - no problem buddy. Took me a while to figure out who it was at first. Normally, I'd have been sleeping if you called me that late (I think it was 10 LOL).
  9. Our new website is up and running!

Joe one thing - the case studies seemed a bit odd to navigate (and I found few broken links too FYI). I clicked on the image, expecting to see a series of photos from that particular project, but then it only had one image. Yet if I clicked the text on the left, then I got a different page...
  10. Our new website is up and running!

Joe designed the site --- (which rocks!)
  11. Our new website is up and running!

Looks good Joe. I like the illy's on the home page. I agree on the gallery issues. But rest looks cool!
  12. Getting paid for your work

I'll keep them informed of hours generally when we start approaching our cap. This serves two purposes; obviously it lets them know that the 'can you try this, or what about if we do this' art direction will begin to cost them additional money; and secondly, it helps finalize the decision much...
  13. Getting paid for your work

Just be careful basing too much of your pricing on hourly rates. While I agree they should loosely be related, do not penalize yourself for efficiencies gleaned after years, or decades honing your craft. We can do logos faster now after 500 under our belts, than say 5 or 10 years ago (and their...
  14. Chainsaw Carved Logo

Very cool to see the brand built up in 3D. Coupled with the branding on the shop truck, you're making splashes just like I thought it would...
  15. buying artwork

Not sure if its been stated, but 'logos' derived or built from clip art should probably not be called logos, because the person you sell it to cannot ever claim any rights to that branding, since the artwork is public domain (meaning, royalty free). When you read the fine print of iStock and...
  16. Blogs on Websites

We actually do have some newer sites with blogs, but it's only usually sold to a client who is having us manage their blogs (and in many cases, their social media efforts) as well. We have a writer on staff who manages many our accounts blogs and social media. Like Joe said, unless the content...
  17. Designing Logo Black/White

This was one I did many years ago with a plane, which we drew. http://www.graphicd-signs.com/portfolio-logo-contractors#23 There's a few other designs in that gallery you might find relevant (as panel based logos). THis one, similar to Ricks, also is a panel based logo. But note the use of...
  18. Wait a minute.. here's my latest logo attempt (or, Don't laugh at my truck sketch)

I really like this. In spite of having a lot of elements and eye candy it's still legible You should have nixed the 'INC' though. The clip art looks a bit forced - but not sure if there's better options. Thanks for the book plug. It's funny you mention about Mike Stevens, and having a hard...
  19. Designing Logo Black/White

It's not bad, but I have never been fond of relying on heavy outlines on main copy that sits on a background of the same value. So where your DA and NS sit outside, it's dependent on a outlining to 'hold' it and make it legible. I this instance, if you choose to go this route, it should probably...
