    Just sorta answered my own question. I used a program to tell me why the file was still "open" and I killed the handle the file was associated with http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html Why this particular EPS was still open even after restarting is still beyond me.

    I have this problem on my work computer and the one I use at home. Sometimes it doesn't happen but sometimes when I go to delete an EPS or AI file it gives me an error that it's in use. Even when I haven't even opened up Illustrator after a reboot. Is Windows being goofy?

    I thought about using a Garamond family. Nothing quite matches that serif on the lower-case "g". Oh well, there's no "g" in the new name we're replacing it with :)
