Flexi used to have a fairly decent (much better than Illustrator) auto trace, and I've heard good things about Vector Magic -- you might d/l the trial software and see if it works better than what you are using now. They also offer an online service if you don't need to convert that much. -g-

The substrate can make a huge difference, especially if it is matte -- keep in mind that you can adjust the density settings for individual colors, too, through the control panel -- you would be advised to create a profile for this experiment, with a separate user profile for 3m white. -g-
