First Made-in-America Smartphone

Today, Google-owned Motorola is officially announcing the new Moto X, an Android-powered device that, as its ads remind us, will be the first smartphone actually manufactured in the United States. Motorola is teaming with Flextronics to assemble the handsets at a former Nokia factory in Fort Worth, Texas, which will eventually employ somewhere around 2,000 workers.

Heck no. I was just being a smart-***. A 2000 person employer is HUGE for the local economy and it's nice to see economic forces here aligning so that a company can (and will) bring that kind of manufacturing back.

I wish I could find that news article I read about Black and Decker circular saws. It showed that the per-unit price for making them in China was just over $1 less than the cost of making them in the US. They were basically forced to send production to China because their major retailer gave them the option of providing them at the Chinese price or not providing them at all.

My 1st thought on this was no way it could be true.....But do not not really know how to make a calculation that proves my point.....

As far as retaillers being at fault....Why blame them?....Is it your fault your clients want imported shirts versus USA made shirts?...I sell what my clients want not what I want to sell...

Yesterday I heard something about McDonalds employees wanting $15.00 an hour (you mean they want to support their famillies??) and how that would bring the price of a hamburger up past $3.99 to about sixty something cents higher. Made me think of how much an entire meal would cost, multiplied by the number of family members you tookk out to lunch. Ouch! But then it might also make us not over eat so much. We could end up with skinnier Americans, not a bad thing!

I wonder what real USA manufacturing and decent paid workers would bring the price of a Smart Phone to? Oh, and what would decent pay be? Seems we don't even know that anymore.

We wouldn't have our jobs going over seas if it were not for the strict child labor laws we have in this country. If our kids can't get a good education then at least let them start working in factories after middle school....Sheesh no wonder we're falling behind.:Big Laugh

I'm with SignManiac on this one, also let the government send those free breakfast and lunch meals for the kids to the factory instead of the schools. It is a win win. "Pull level A for SignManiac".

Aside from getting back to manufacturing things on our own we gotta kick the government out of. Business. The rules, the laws, the OSHA, the stipulations and the taxes. All of that needs to be lessened as so companies can operate without big brothers "help"

Google is eating everyone's lunch and not even breaking a sweat .
Google literally has more power and data than the government.
And I think they are still a relatively new company .

If it was COMPLETELY designed and built in America I would pay more. Like I said before it's a "feel good" marketing ploy. Assembling Chinese products in an American factory is not what I call Made in the USA. I know I use to do the same thing for years. It galled me no end when I had to put the Made in America decal on.
