Tonight we had our first meeting. Pretty much going over what people's ideas for revising the codes should be.
Pole signs are outlawed in our town, but it was noticed "pole signs" are NOT defined anywhere in our codes, so...My question is how can they be outlawed? There are height and set-back regulations, but NO definition of what make a pole sign vs a monument sign.
Our next meeting is going to be defining types of signs, allowed or not. But, in the mean time I guess pole signs could technically be installed if they meet all the other requiments that are defined in the codes.

Good luck Mosh..I would not be able to handle going to a meeting like that.
Myself it's Government intrusion of business... If it was just safety concerns for community that I understand, like no pole signs cause your in tornado alley so height restricted, or all signs mounted certain restrictions apply.
But like here restriction on sign size on windows, buildings, amounts, types, all sorts of restrictions that have nothing to do with safety of the public.
Safety of public is priority to me only the Government concern ..NOT
( example..re- lettered a awning my letters were 1" to tall )or ( a truck customers uses for pick/delivery they would not let park out front and fined for because having signs lettered on it. )
More local restrictions might be for a historical area, keeping the area looking like it is with same kind of sign image, which are understandable.
Other restrictions that boil me, when applying for permit.. how many parking spaces. or no lettering on outside of glass, inside ok as long as does not touch glass.????

A custom want to repaint the faces of his faded non-illuminated monument sign, I provided her with specs: repaint aluminum faces, 3M vinyled text per drawing.
The planner come back with this requirement: routed out aluminum face, backed with acrylic for text.
I emailed: Can you tell me why a NON-ILLUMINATED face needs to do that?
Here is the respond: A non-illuminated monument sign face needs to be routed out and backed with acrylic pursuant to the Section 11.72.230 of the Montclair Municipal Code which reads as follows:
“Each sign should be designed to relate to the architectural style of the main building or buildings on the site and be compatible with the style or character of existing improvements upon the lot adjacent to the site. Incorporation of one or more of the predominantly visual design elements of such building(s), such as building materials, colors, or other design details shall be required. Sign panels on monument signs shall be constructed of an opaque material (i.e. aluminum), color and/or finish consistent with that on the main building(s). Acrylic or Plexiglas sign panels shall be expressly prohibited. Sign copy on monument signs shall be individual, internally or halo-illuminated channel letters attached to, or routed into, the sign panel background”.
