Sign for the Back of a Dump Body on a Truck

I have a customer who just put a dump insert and in and we are looking to letter it, However the problem is there is a piece of angle iron about 2 deep making the tailgate into 3 pieces. The only thing I can think of is doing alu-panel or something of the sort and then placing a 2x4 behind the alu-panel and thru bolt them, just not sure how well it will look or if I am missing an obvious idea. iam assuming you ONLY PRINT........so you need to learn how to split the print and apply it to the existing panels and also apply the print to the outside surface of the 2" piece of steel that seperates the panels.

I could letter each panel and that wouldnt be a problem but he wants something mounted to make the back panel look flat.

We have done it with 4mm or 6mm ACM. It must be fastened tightly and preferably also have a beads of silicone. Those get slammed & bounced HARD and anything not well fastened won't last long.

You are a sign maker, not a body shop..... Correct ?? Why should your job include doing something you can only deliver as a half a$$ed 'Quick Fix ??

That should be a plate, welded on and finished with auto paint, not a piece of aluminum. Tell him to get it done and you'll be happy to letter it at that time.

that is the worst picture ever as no clue what I am looking at. isn't that a regular puck up truck with what might be some vertical angle attached to the tail gate? not sure what you are trying to do. if there is 2" angle, can you make a pan with a 2" return and put it over the vertical angle (that is if that is what the picture shows)

Forget what I said, I was talking about a dump truck like OP posted a pic of. That looks like a homemade POS and there's no good way to make it work. Maybe what Marlene suggested, but the best thing it to tell him to break out his welder again and put a steel plate on there.

Must be more than a few stupid sign shops around here. Pretty common to see ACM or aluminum panels with digital prints fastened to a dump truck. Or like one of our customers, 4mm ACM cut out reflective logos fastened to the sides & tailgates of dump trailers, been using them for 15 years. I'll let them know next time I can't do any more because it's stupid.

Actually an operator who knows anything always loads over the side? Why would you ever load over a tailgate? That wouldnt give an even load for the axel?

It depends on what you are loading, how you are loading it and/or unloading it.

That's the only thing that I do know about, so I have to add in my 2 cents. Make it look like there is something between my ears instead of a sign saying "space for rent".

you realize the OP stated a dump insert, which is an insert that goes in the existing bed of an 8' pickup truck.... Also there are no trucks on the road 10' wide without oversize load permits. You also might want to know there are very few loader buckets smaller then 6' wide unless we are talking garden tractors, So as someone stated before most trucks are loaded from the sides unless it is something palletized. Sorry none of this is really relevant to the thread starters question, it just irks me when smartasses try and make a a dik out of someone when they dont know much about what they are talking about


To answer the threadstarters question I would give the customer the option of vinyl on the tailgate and if they insist on a flat panel I would weld some clips on for mounting or even make a thin alum pan sign with a removable subframe and screw or weld the subframe to the back. that would be the nicest look and concealed fasteners, If they are just going to be super cheap then just sell them a .080 or even .125 alum panel and tek screw it right to the ribs of the gate
