Tbt Truck Lettering

Simple lettering job on a friend's van in the early 80s. Oldtimers will note the pounce powder and yes, I was a user of the dreaded cheat -scotch tape for the top and bottom line. Also, no I'm not that tall, I was standing on my handy dandy tool box/step stool.

I always hadda look at what my hands were doing when I painted.

We were never allowed to use the tape method, unless the boss wasn't around.

Think I fixed that error, still getting used to uploading pics. Yea, the old timers frowned on the tape, but then I worked for a guy who bought it by the case, he was more into getting it done than style. He was also the first shop around here that bought the original Gerber 4B.

I agree with using tape. It make your corners nice and square, and it speeds the job up. It's just another tool. By the way did you ever use a mahl stick?

I was trained at Butera Sign School with the hand over hand technique. I do have a mahl stick and used it occaissionally when I was working over wet lettering.

this was done ALL....... free handed. ownwer said" i want a boat, palm trees & sunset, rest is up to you." drawn on each door, no sketch or pattern. fonts are just from my head, rope was added at the finish touch. both side look the same.....not exact....3-4 hours

Not as far back as the 80s, but this was my first lettering job on a vehicle/trailer. That I can remember doing. I would have been 12 at the time. Had a little bit of help.

Ha!...
Signwriter's tape, they called it -- usually yellow. We also bought it by the case. When you have to do 36 NO PARKING signs, tape is used.

Also, we had the first 4B in Alberta (besides the city sign dept) -- This industry has changed so much.

<edit> Thoughts to ponder: The Gerber IVB is older than the font Arial. (I think) -- Nope, just checked -- Arial designed in 1982 -- never knew it was that old

I miss Internationals, We had a 63 Travelall a 65 Scout and a 70 Travelall

YEA IT WAS A 66-68 4x4 SHORT BED V-8. this is another one i work on. it was actually a truck owned by my wifes uncle. he bought it new in 67, and he worked in the oil fields in oklahoma.
the truck was brought back here by him, he put in the back yard, he got sick passed away. his kids it got to a dealership, another relative(cousin)was a bookkeeper and took the truck as payment for his work. didnt know it was a family vehicle till he sent for the title. then he decided to restore it. i asked what it cost to get it where it is.....he wont discuss it)))) just says he will never get out of it what he put into it.
i did the hubcaps, bumpers, oil cans that go with it, the bass sign is his, styled in the GOSS'S GARAGE all paint. found the full pic of the marina truck.........the orange one.

Used the green fineline tape when I needed to quickly finish up. Easy to lay down and snap off. Gave a nice clean line.

ah the good old days.I think about them often.Life in a sign shop was easier then....I think
