ok am needing a bit of help I just pulled my spare vj-1204 out of storage and had planned to convert it over to sublimation ink however in seeing if everything is working all I get on the Magenta slot is not original it doesn't matter whether I use a empth mutho cart which i would think should read ink end or a 3rd party or a bulk smartcard i get not original I have cleaned the contacts on the printer and nothing the firmware is 1.16 any suggestions on what to try?

On our old VJ-1604 the card reader pins would get bent when fitting cartridges.
This became such a common occurence I had spare card readers to fit when this happened.
I am guessing this is your problem also.

Did’nt the 1204 change awhile back where you had to use 3rd party inks because you could not use the Mutoh ecosolvent inks anymore?

so i actually removed the cartridge bay so i could look at it i cleaned the chip reader, and no change so I am guessing i just need to go ahead and replace the chip reader board?

Well I replaced the ink chip reader that's in the cartridge slot and I still get the same error not original even if I put in an original cartridge so what are suggestions for what I should check next

is your supplier pirating the cards?
there is a good profit in cutting mutoh out of their end of the transaction.

if it is a "spare"

swap the cartridge set. see what happens

swap the black with one of the other colors, putting wrong colors in 2 slots.

is the firmware version the same on both machines?

Ok I have tried 2 original cartridges both say not original even one that is empty and a 3rd party it of course says not original. If I swap them and put a black in magenta it takes it and doesn't give error if I put magenta in black slot it takes it and doesn't give error in thoughly confused at this point

If there is no error showing, please check the Ink Status menu. Are the ink cards recognized and is the ink volume displayed?

When I have them swapped it reads a level when I have a magenta in the magenta slot I get --- for volume

It is possible that the Cartridge Exist sensor is not working properly.
When the sensor is triggered by inserting the cartridge, the printer should start the chip-detection procedure. At that moment you should hear a beep. After that, the system should either display the ink volume or show a chip error message.

If there is no beep when the cartridge is inserted or removed, this indicates that the sensor is not functioning correctly.

we have not run our 1204 in several years.
shouldn't there be a ink in wrong slot or wrong color error possibly superseding the other error?

If wrong slot, wrong position, wrong data on the card only one error will be displayed - Not Original.
Sometimes, not always, if you put wrog color color card in the slot, it may cause block the card by writing some wrong data.

You might just need to update the firmware. Yours is pretty far back. At one point, Mutoh introduced an improved MS31 ink and the part number changed. Maybe your firmware is looking for that old ink and doesn't recognize the new style card.

Converting a eco solvent to dye sub conversation was brought up many times but never seen one succeusfflly done it. You'd need to replace anything that touches ink. Lines, head, dampers, station, printhead. Now turn it on and hopefully nothing goes wrong and hoping that you're able to have a good nozzle check. The rollers ain't going to work because it is going to crease the paper. Now the firmware. You can't change a firmware on a printer. Mutoh simply does not allow.

I would just get a Mutoh RJ900x dye sub printer. Comes ready to go.
